T-SB-0044-14 Feedback: Engine ECM Reprogram [Pinging]

i called toyota today. trying to get the 2011's on the list. i hate the noise.

 

Update....

After running a full tank of regular 87 gas, I still have a very slight ping on occasion. It is WAY better than before and you really have to listen for it but unfortunately it is still there somewhat. It also tends to be a bit worse when running the A/C. The gas mileage after running regular seemed to be about the same as premium. I averaged 21.6 mpg on the one tank of regular fuel that I ran.

The computer now does a much better job at managing the pinging. I can actually here it ping for a second or 2 and then it disappears as the ECU retards the timing, where as before it would just continue to ping.

I will continue to run premium 93 octane gas for now, as I get zero ping while running it. Also, it seems to run MUCH smoother & more quiet with premium fuel.

 

I just came on to say the same thing and will add that I put in 89 on the last tank with the same results as 87. It seems to start once truck is at operating temp and outside temp over 80 with the a/c on. With a/c off I would say it is a normal ping with the computer acting on it quicker then before. My mpg has been off due vacation but the tank I just ran through this week seems to be same as before the TSB was performed. Going to try 91 next tank to see what happens.

 

I'm 1/2 way through my first tank of regular, and I can barely notice a slight ping. I would say 98% problem solved, 2% issue still present. I'll keep monitoring as the miles go by.

 

Very similar experience. It cleared up 98% of the issue but it is still there a bit. I am just playing it safe by going back to running 93. Especially since the TSB, the truck seems to run smoother/better/quieter on 93 octane.

 

This should be interested because I'm going to continue down the 87 regular unleaded fuel path for the time being.

I do plan on calling the service writer @ toyota back & letting him know that 2% of the problem still manifests itself in same conditions.

Since Feb. '13, I have spent ~$6,000 on fuel & driven over 30,000 miles....soooo....I have an strong desire to go back to 87 unleaded .

I had the T-SB-0044-14 reprogramming done to eliminate the pinging noise on my 2013 Tacoma. I had to have a technician ride with me, he heard it a couple of times and verified it was there. It's been over a month and the ping noise has significantly been reduced. Once in a while I will hear it, but it's much better than it was before. I recommend getting this reprogramming done. It only takes an hour or less. Your engine will feel and sound smoother.

Lastly, I want to thank all the people here for the info. and also posting the TSB. It helped me get my Truck sounding like new again.

 

I went to the dealer yesterday to get the tsb done. The dealer was backed up with work, so they told me to come back monday. There is also another recall for my truck for the driveshaft. It feels like someone is bumping the back of my truck when I accelerate from a stop, or let off the brakes. I'll report back after they are done.

 

Another update; I've put about 6 tanks of 87 octane through the taco. Mostly mixed driving, one 10 hour round trip to Atlanta. MPG unchanged, hand-calculated. Temps have been in the low 90's most days. Occasionally I hear a FAINT ping but the knock sensor seems to get to it quickly. I'd say the problem is 99% fixed and I'm much happier with the way the motor runs.

Had the TSB done to my 2014 on Friday and so far it's been great. I have this one hill on my normal route that ALWAYS makes the truck ping. After the TSB work, it's dead silent AND smooth. The thing that I like most about the fix is it doesn't feel like it's lugging uphills and when I go from slow to moderate acceleration. Acceleration is smooth going uphill now, and the truck feels like it knows how/when to shift. Before it felt like it would forget to shift or it'd fumble to shift going uphill, which made me gas it to make it downshift.

 

ok thats it, time for me to schedule an apointment for this to be done... everyone is saying mostly positive stuff and better behavior on some of the stuff that annoys me.

I have been "managing" the pings by using 89 or 91 but last 2 tanks I tried 87 and it is "almost" unmanageable. It pings on slightest hill and I make it pings at any given time.

I have a schedule to bring it in tomorrow and will report back. I put in about 20000 miles a year or more so I have the desire to go back to 87.

 

I've put in over 1K miles since the TSB. The truck is still running smooth, I've only heard the pinging once and it was very brief, then it went away.

I figured that since I was at the 30K mile mark and had the TSB done it would be a good time to change the plugs. Several were gapped over .055, guess it was time!

 

91 octane cured the issue, now that the weather has cooled off around here, truck is running flawlessly.

 

We get 93 octane around here, so I tried it once. It helped a little, but wasn't enough to solve the issue altogether. It also gets pretty hot here. Since the TSB was performed, I'm still running 87 and no pinging. When I brought my truck in, my service advisor told me that higher octane fuel will cause the engine to ping. That plus some other BS he tried to feed me (driveshaft can't be serviced or lubed, my 7-day-old air filter was inspected and marked "yellow" on the checklist) lost him my business.

I'm not sure why he said higher octane will cause pinging. This seems inaccurate.

The slip joint on the rear driveshaft doesn't have a grease fitting, and must be physically separated after dropping a portion of the driveshaft out from under the truck. This involves some disassembly. Maybe he was referring to the slip joint?

Air Filter - Cabin Air Filter, or Engine Air Filter?

 

Just had the TSB done earlier this afternoon. The truck seems to idle and run a little smoother, with occasional pining. The service writer said it will take a little time for the computer to make some adjustments, but I hope it all smooths out with some time. I am going back tomorrow to have the driveshaft replaced.
