exhaust mileage increase

Has anyone that has installed an aftermarket exhaust system noticed an increase in fuel mileage?

 

Coupled to a CAI and the right tune you can see a better increase in MPG, but I wouldn't count on it. If there was any it would be 1-2 mpg, after about 1500 bucks worth of pipes.

 

Seems that with the engines of today that an exhaust mod is just for your own desires and not so much for extra fuel mpg's...

 

Exactly. However with my 07 Mustang GT I had full exhaust, headers, x-pipe no cats, cat backs, CAI, and a tune, and I got 30+ mpg on the highway.

So for some applications it does work. I know with my Mustang I got much much better fuel economy, however it cost over 2 grand to get the extra mpgs.

 

not to be argumentative, but its actually only about $600 in pipes and a couple of guys are reporting about 2-4mpg in increased fuel mileage. With gas prices on the rise, it might actually be worth it.

I recently had a conversation about this with my brother, who is a BMW certified mechanic. He said that he would suggest a reprogram/change in the computer to get the best MPG out of any vehicle. So some kind of active computer management would net the best MPG increase.

 

What exactly are guys putting on? Y-pipes and catbacks? I bought my Taco 2 days ago....

your assuming that gas is going to stay below the 3.50 a gallon mark, which it is already above here. the "experts" say it could go as high as $6.00 a gallon before this time next year.

 

I gained 22 HP with mine but lost a couple MPG's...if you guys see an increase on the 4.0 that's lucky.

 

did that 22hp gain cause you to change your driving habits? cuz I would guess it would be easier to punch it if you could feel it or even know that it's there.

 

I see what you're saying-yeah it makes enough difference to satisfy-but my habits haven't changed. I've always treated her to WOT onto freeways or maybe the occasional long open stretch...but now that things are flowing a little better, it's drinking up a little more to do tha same stuff. I've got the older 3.4 and it has a nice big airbox and intake plenum stock-so there ya go

BTW a good way to increase mpgs is to get skinnier tires.

I'm running a stock '06 1 inlet/2 outlet Tundra muffler (Waltrip Edition) with two 3" pipes out the passenger side. My truck is rated at 190HP. After the install of the exhaust (I didn't add anything else) it was dyno'd at 212HP. I was told by the TRD guys you have to really watch how much you open your exhaust on these because Toyota tries to balance everything just so. I just wanted twin pipes mainly for the appeal and I got a little bonus

 

Thats to the crank I assume?
