Shotgun advice..??

Whats up fellas Im in the process of buying a shotgun and handgun as well and needed some advice... I am a first time buyer so all and any info would help... I saw at Big 5 yesterday a 12 gage shotgun with a pistol grip and adjustable stock by Mausberg 500A for 379$... What yall think...?? And Im looking in between 2 handguns... The Sig Sauer and the Gloc-40....

What is the shotgun going to be used for? What is your handgun going to be used for? Lots of different firearms for different applications. If you plan on getting a .40 cal, I would buy a 9mm barrel from Lone Wolf to cut the price of ammunition in half for practice.

 

the shotgun i guess more for home protection and just letting off some rounds in the desert... The handgun is the same thing... i may be a newb but who or what is Lone wolf..?? The reason y i was looking at the Gloc 40 was cuz a buddy of mine just purchased one and i liked it... But u have a point i do want to take the price of rounds into account..

 

What are they going to be used for?

If you are looking for a "Throw in the back of your truck" shotgun that will never let you down, then the Remington 870 is about as tried and true as you can get.

If you are going to be shooting sporting clays, trap, skeet shooting, hunting, then the answer may very.

As for handguns, Sigs and Glocks are both great guns.

I'm sure you will get a lot of "Glocks suck. I have a Sig." or "Sigs suck I have a Glock." but they are both good guns. Just get one that has the features you like and feels good in your hands.

Might I also recommend the Walther P99 (feels like part of my hand)

Thanks Ill check out that p99.... I had talked to someone the other day and he was telling me that the SIGs take more maintenance then the Glocs... Is that true...?? Oh what do u think of the Mausberg..??

I love my Mossberg 590a1. Its built like a tank! 20" heavy barrel, 8+1, mossberg ghost rings, came with a bayonet. Id recomend a mossberg although there was an issue with a shippment of em @ Big5 over here like 8 months ago, my cousin purchased a standard 590 and the tube spring was defective along with like 5 others from that store.

 

You can't go wrong with a mossberg! As far as the pistols, pick the one that feels better to you. You can always mod the hell out it later down the road. (change the sights, pistol grip, barrels, etc...)

 

More main't than glocks? These aren't cars were talking about. All handguns should all be at least field stripped and cleaned from time to time. From sheer use, parts don't generally wear out that often. Striker fired guns have less parts than conventional SA/DA guns but there really isn't much of a maintenance difference.

Mossbergs are good shotguns. But honestly I'd stay away from those "tactical" ones sold at Big 5. The parts are from ATI which is renowned for cheap bad fitting parts.

If you want to customize your shotgun later on, 870's have a wider after market selection to choose from. Shoulder several different brands and get a feel for which controls are better for you and which point more naturally.

 

Basic, starter gun: I'd second the recommendation on a Remington 870. Standard 12 gauge pump action, won't let you down, and they're also about $300.

Personally I feel like mossberg 500's are a bit more cheaply made; I think there's a reason most shotgun owners have at least one old 870, and every gunstore has a wide selection of used 500's. But i'm probably biased.

 

I have my mossberg 500 for over 10years and I never had a problem. On pistol Sig 226 is my pick.

 

no to dis all the main guns and all but i use a charles daly 12 ga that i got at walmart.
i have also used high end beneli shotguns and by far the walmart shotgun outruns them in my opinion.

 

Right on fellas i appreciate the help... The only reason y Im shooting for the mossberg is just cuz big 5 had a sale on them... 479$ to 379$... IS this just a normal sale..?? Or are these guns not selling cuz thats a pretty big mark down 100$...

 

If it's for a 500a then no it's not worth it IMO. For a regular 590, thats questionable if its a deal. For a 590a1 yes it a decent deal for Southern CA. Big 5 puts everything on sale rotation anyway. If you miss this sale, then wait a month and try again.

Though I'd still pass on their pistol grip. I'm not a bells and whistles hater, I just think ATI should be owned by Matel.

*edit: if this is going to be your first shotgun, I might recommend that you get Big 5's Mossberg 500 Combo. It comes with a 18.5"barrel and a 26" barrel for shooting trap etc. It's cheap and it'll give you the most versatility. It goes on sale there all the time. I might pass on that 590 until you know more of what feels comfortable for you.

 

Remington 870! If you ever get tired of it, the resale price will be better than the Mossberg.

 

Turners has a Remington 870 for 330 I think. Really doesn't matter with Mossberg, Remington, or Winchester. Everyone has a side they pick, I wanted a Remington 870 and ended up with a winchester 1300 defender for 250, and I've been happy with it ever since, no regrets there. Also where in socal are you at?

 

I agree that the Rem. 870 is a better long-term value than a Mossberg. I'm also pretty partial to the Binelli Super Nova, costs a little more $ than the Remington but not all that much and a really great pump shotgun.

Sig or Glock? I prefer the Sigs generally, but you can't argue with success and the Glocks have been extremely popular, and generally cost less too. I'd tilt toward a 9x19 rather than a 40 if you're mostly just going to be blowing holes in the desert. Ammo way cheaper, less recoil, and still a fairly credible personal defense round.

 

Remington 870, my bro has had one for atleast a decade now and has taken it threw tons of muddy rainy situations and it still goes hard.... oh yea he blasted 25 doves opening day

 

well handgun wise. go for the sig saur. the coast guard uses the DAK version which is just a more refined version of the P228 i believe. its more apt for concealed carry and it packs a .40 cal punch. other models go from 9 MM up to 45 cal. but you pick the best round for what your scenario is going to be for. as for the shotgun, personally, mossbergs are great guns. people will tell you otherwise. adn tell you that because of the aluminium reciever, they will screw up and warp and all this other stuff. but the AR15 has an aluminum reciever and it does jsut fine. also the mossberg 590s are Mil spec approved.

the remington on the other hand is also a good gun. its been around since the beginning of popular shotguns. both guns cycle differently. mossbergs are a litle more solid feel to it. rems, are more smoother in certain areas. but its just like a chevy vs ford debate. in the end id say, screw it and go for both when you have the money.

 

I've got a Remington 870 Express Magnum Home Defender w/ a pistol grip and a .40 Glock 23c...IMO this is the ideal setup lol
