Hey guys i have some questions. I been thinking about getting a 2gen tacoma but not brand new something used. I was leaning more towards a 2x4 because of a few reasons, price, wont really use it, not sure about the mpg difference city driving which is what i mostly do and also how much more insurance would be. Heres what is going on now though, my dad has a 2006 Tacoma TRD 4x4 in perfect condition but does have alot of miles, 97k. He is going to be selling it because he wants a 2001-2004 double cab tacoma again. If I decide to buy he will be giving it to me cheaper than what its worth ofcourse which is the upside and also atleast i know the car is good and oil was always changed. The truck is paid off so I would just have to get a loan for what he decides to sell it to me for. Also the first 3 things that were going to be put on the taco i were to buy was going to be, side steps, bull bar and tints which he already has all three. So my questions are...

    1) What kind of gas millage are you guys getting in the city with a 4x4
    2) How much more in insurance are you paying
    3) Do you think its worth buying this one even though it has miles
    4) I don't need the 4x4 but I guess its good to have because you never know right?

a second gen is a great choice, but as for the 4x4 if you arent going to use it, you can jsut get the locking rear differential and it will do jsut as good on snow and stuff. and the mileage with the 4x2 vs the 4x4 will be different. the 4x2 tends to get better mileage. 1-3 more or so

I would buy a taco with 97k on it. Especially if i knew it was taken care of.

4x4 is a must for me. I live in northern Ohio. Yeah, I really only NEED it 2 or 3 times a year, but I'm never held back by weather. I don't know what area of the country you're in so it may not be as worth it to you but I will never buy a 2 wheel drive truck.

I get roughly 18 or 19 MPG on average.
If you're running 4wheel for any amount of time I think you can actually watch the gas gauge move.

I say buy your dad's. You'll get a good deal and a well taken care of truck. You're taking a chance with any used vehicle. Why not limit the BS?

3" Revtek kit, , Wet Okole seat covers. Now with 285/70/17 BFG all terains on Moto Metal 955 17x9 chrome wheels. Tube steps, Tinted windows. Used to have 265/70/17 BFG all terrains on Mickey Thompson Classic Bead lock wheels,
Buy a 4x 4. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!:mudding:

I'm not trying to be the devil's advocate, but why get it if you're going to use it 1-2 times a year at most? That 3K could go toward mods or even gas money/bigger-better things.

97,000 is not broke in yet and you know the history of it, I would buy it in a heartbeat. If your dad gets a new one have him get one that you like and get it when he decides to get another one in a few years.

Get your dads truck, especially if he's going to cut you a deal on it and you know it's been taken care of.

Thanks everyone. I live in miami florida the biggest hill we have is the trash dump. But again like someone said, its better to have if in case you ever need it especially that im not really paying extra for it. He's going to let me know a price this week but it wont be more than $16k for sure prob around 15k which I don't think its bad for a DC TRD 4x4. Hopefully he decides to sell it, he is 75% sure he wants to sell it so i will find out this week and let you guys know.

Yea, +1 get your dad's truck. I wish I got a 4x4 and I don't "need" it either being in AZ, but there's a lot of fun trails to hit up....

Regardless of whether not it was a 4x4, I would buy my old man's truck in a heartbeat - maintenance always done, know where it's been, never abused... the list of reasons are endless and really need no confirmation! That and the price is right, too :D
