Clear coat on headlight lens?

Went to a local body shop a while back for a paint quote. The guy noticed my headlights and said he could restore my headlight lens and spray a clear coat on the lens so that it wouldn't discolor again.
Has anyone done this before?

Just a standard clear coat? Same as over the paint?

I don't know the composition but it smells different.
It has anti yellow stuff in it I was told

 

One of the major body shops in my area is doing this. I've known the fellows for over twenty years. They claim that the UV inhibitors in the clear coat is key in your tired old, newly polished lens, staying bright and clear. I know I've reconditioned some before with good results. Only to have them "yellow" very quickly afterwards.

This sounds kinda cool, and a complete fix for hazing/yellowing.

No, but I can find out. Just assumed it was standard with UV protectors. I also just bought new lights (before hearing about this) Depo brand appear to be just as good as OEM. BTW, I worked at North American Lighting. We made all the Tacoma reward lighting at my plant, standard and LED. Again, these fixtures appear just as well made IMO.

 

I have been doing this for years at the shop to restore faded headlights. The clear coating on the lens surface gets faded and yellow/flakes off over time. I use 2000 grit sand paper to sand it all smooth, then spray one coat of Bulldog adhesion promoter. Let it flash, then 2 coats of a quality standard clear-coat. It will last you pretty much forever.

 

What are the part numbers for your Depo lights?

 

I'll keep this in mind. Will the clear coat not stick to the lens without applying the Bulldog first?

Technically it can. The purpose of the Bulldog is to act as a clear "primer" just like in painting. It helps the clear stick better, and longer.

 

How much would this service cost a person?

I'll make sure to pick up a can and have the body shop apply it before they spray the clear coat.

I typically charge $79 a pair, not including shipping costs if shipped. There is a lot of prep work involved.

 

friend of mine waxes his ranger they still look brand new.. Put suntan lotion on them.
