What kind of differential?

    Finally buying my first Tacoma!

    My apologies if it's a dumb question, but unfortunately I know next to nothing about vehicles. I never heard of differentials until I came here.
    I've read the howstuffworks.com explanation on differentials but how would I know what kind is on my Tacoma?

    To begin with, it's an '04 4x4 w/ standard transmission. No TRD decals.

    You should have a code on the sticker on the door jamb. It should be a letter, followed by 2 mumbers, then another letter.
    Example:
    B07A

    Find the code, and post it up, and we can tell ya what you have. :)

    Guessing an open diff, unless someone has removed the stickers and you have a button that says "RR Diff Lock" in orange writing to the left of the steering column.

    It means for every 4.3 revolutions of the Drive shaft, the rear axel spins 1 time.

    cool i didnt know about the code thing. Another side question on my tacoma (1997 basic extended cab 4x4 srs model) i have locking diffs in the front and limited slip in the rear right? to be honest i dont really know if the diff, is correct to use for the front but what do i know i am just a kid.

    what does a tcase ratio mean? I know in lo for the its like 2.5:1 and hi is 1:1

    does that mean with my TRD, in Hi it's 4.1:1, and in Lo it's like a 10:1 drive?

    If I understand correctly (from what I've read in other threads), the tire size is partially dependent on the gear ratio. Is there a range of tire sizes I can choose from, or am I limited to just one?

    you can buy whatever fits on your truck.

    once you get into bigger tires you're going to want to regear due to the size of the tire.

    once you get into 33's (with the V6 at least) you'll be able to tell there is some powerloss and should think about possibly regearing. if you go bigger you're definately going to want to regear.

    If I understand correctly, I can go up to 32", but if I want 33" or above, I'd have to re-gear? I measured the diameter of mine and they appear to be 29".

    You need to go by the size on the side of the tire. With 4:30's, you would be fine with w 32" tall tire. A 265/75/16 for example.
