Trying to do the deck plate mod

I have a 2003 tacoma 2.7L 4x4 extanded cab 5 speed. My problem is the air box has no flat sides they are all sort of ribed. I have no place to install a deck plate. Any help or ideas would be great.

 

mine was ribed too, just take ur deck accessary plate, & trace around it. then just cout along the trace that u made! u may have to do a lil more trimming on ur hole (circle), put ur deck plate in, drill ur holes, take it back out, put some sylicone around ur deck plate (i used rtv sylicone on mine), then put it in the hole in ur air box, put the screws in, & ur done!

 

Ok thanks for the help just didnt want to cut a big hole in my air box if I couldn't seal it back up.

 

Cut out hole so you can set the deckplate in. mark how far out it reaches by the ribs. Cut the ribs off up to the point you marked.

 

im thinking about doing the deckplate mod to my '02 2.7 also, are you happy with yours devilsalmostfree? what size deckplate did you end up with? did you buy it locally or online?

 

the 2.4 and 2.7 can fit up to a 4 inch plate though 3 inches is what most people use...for the 3.4l you can fit up to a 6 inch plate but again most people use 5 inch plates.

 

I am about to do this mod as well(04 3.4) I hope it works out well I get 24mpg now so we will see if it helps in that dept. I guess I will use the 5" plate. I may plug my silencer to see that helps also but I will wait untill I figure out my mpgs with just the plate and the existing k&n.

 

yeah man, im very happy with mine, i gained around 2-3 mpg with it, the took off the intake silencer thing, & later on added a afe pro dry s air filter, i get anywhere between 26-28 mpg, depends on my driving, & i also fill up everyday, not needed, just something i do! i bought a 4" deck plate, i bought it locally at a marine shop in my town, costed $6.50 plus tax. i wished ild known about it before!

 

i have an 03 4wd and i used a 4". i also am really happy with it. i take the air filter out a bit more often than i used to and clean it but other than that, only posotives. i got 2mpg out of it and it sounds really cool when youre goin up a real steep hill so you drive it a gear lower than you normally would.

 

i really appreciate the feedback, but im much more interested in what people did and the results on the 2.7 1st gen motor

Hey guys I finished my deck plate mod today after work total cost was $13 for the deck plate, $6 for the sensor safe silicone, and $4 for a package of screws. Everthing always cost a little more up here in canada. Ill know tomorrow if I feel any difference but I doubt I will as I still have a stock filter installed , k and n on order but is going to take a couple of weeks.

 

i finished up mine as well im pretty happy with it

4" deck plate ~$6
RTV silicone ~$4
screw pack ~$2

well worth it, i will post pictures in a bit.

 

Really Stupid question here. Why are you guys using a deckplate? Why and when do you close it? For rain, washing under the hood? These are the only reasons I see for closing the hole. Correct? or no...

 

i assumed it was to keep the rain out during heavy rain, but then i left it off one day and checked the inside of my box and it was totally dry, maybe i should keep it on during rain anyway for moisture reasons?

I don't know mine stays in my glove box most of the time, id like to know the answer for sure.

Yeah, I know it's a cleaner lookin job, but I'm off this week and feel like doing the mod, but can't get a deck plate until next week sometime. With it open, does it effect emissions for passing inspection..? I would think with this mod, the engine would run a little leaner. Looking for an answer. I have my hole saw and dremel ready to roll......

 

i would say as long as your not planning on driving in any heavy rain or going off-road you should be ok. i live in alabama and we dont have any kind of inspection here so i dont know jack about that.

 

It should not effect emissions.
