Is it still the extruded poly styrene (little white balls). We can't use anything less then 2 lb for insulation now and it has to be closed cell foam. 1/2lb is ok for windows and doors and sealing small air gaps

Interesting. The black stuff would be a pain in the butt. If you ever had a leak it would be hard to find the black mould lol

 

Is that an Ontario thing ? Pretty sure you can use less than 2lb as long as the build up is sufficient to get the proper R value but the difference is that 2lb foam is considered a vapour barrier at normal insulation thicknesses whereas 1/2lb and 1lb foam is not a vapour barrier so if you used it you would have to apply an additional VB layer

 

The only time 1/2lb foam can be used for insulating cavities/walls is if the home owner does it (the kits from hd). I've never saw 1lb foam used on any jobs. Our building codes may be changing soon regarding the vb properties of 2lb foam. Some of my inspectors won't let it be classified as a vb unless we install those plastic stud covers prior to spraying the foam. And we have to have a minimum depth before it's classed as a vb

 

Not to mention they are trying to push our r values higher and higher on every job it seems like

We're currently dealing with code questions over spray into wall / floor cavity 2lb because of frame shrinkage seperation leading to gaps in the vapour barrier

 

BC already had an insulation value code revision in 2012

Ya that's part of the reason for the stud caps and, as it was explained to me, wood isn't considered a vb because of the internal cell structure of it

You having to do anything with your floors? They are trying to enforce either approved paint to 'seal' the wood sheeting or a bare minimum of a sealant between all joints and seams

 

What do you guys have?

We are r31 floors, r24 walls, and r50 for ceilings

 

There is 3 zones in BC , on the coast we are r30 floors , r20 walls , r40 ceilings , r 20 sub slab

The two other zones in the north and the interior have higher r values

 

Cool, what about for "three season dwellings"?

 

No such thing here , any building that is not covered under the farm building code has to be insulated to the same standard
