    That's what they are trying to do here now but they have weird way to interpret it. It's either bring it up to the standard code for new or nothing at all

    We did an addition on a 100 yo+ shack. it had no insulation in it, someone added some r12 to the roof at one point. Our inspector made us insulate the addition to current standard.... And it was open to the rest of the house lol

    It's just too bad they can't make their own judgement call in it. Especially for these tiny sheds where the budget is tight, the savings from having to upsize the framing , insul and vb would benefit the customer

    but then somebody could just do continual renos to a 100 year old building until it was a completely new house but built to 100 year old standards

    Or do like they do in CA and tear down all but one wall of a house and call it a reno so they can avoid the taxes/permitting/etc of new construction.

    Sometimes it is the only way to be able to rebuild in the existing location due to increased set backs to the ocean and riparian zones

    I can kinda see that up there as you are limited for space on the islands...but not in the middle of the mainland here in the US. They're doing it for tax breaks

    That's CA for ya! can't blame them though...they get bent over enough by taxes and govt regulations, gotta use those loopholes.

    I can imagine. We have some pretty scummy looking places around here (not many thankfully) but I know they wouldn't even come close to what big cities have.

    & you are 100% right & I'll add it's equally for the avoidance of the fees for new const. permits, give you an example, right across from my house the neighbor wanted to build (he's a masonry contr.) He had to pay just under $60k in pulled permits, hasn't even broken ground & he's into the county for that....nuts
