that black box is the charcoal canister...it activates around 6-10 hours of the truck not being turned on and releases the vapors inside the gas tank

Wow .. you guys are quick !!

How long have these 'canisters' been used, never noticed one before ?

Thought it was exhaust related but wasn't sure. So it 'cleans' vapors from exhaust and gas tank ?

    Check out the build
Something like that. They can be ruined if you continually top off.

Good to know, I never top off but always keep a full tank. Usually when I'm down a quarter tank, I'll go fill it up before I hit half tank.

My 1983 Eagle has something similar to this in the engine bay. It has a line to the fuel tank and one to the carb bowl. I believe it's tied to the coolant temp sensor that controls the EGR on that vehicle. Now they are all computer controlled. Emissions stuff started in the 70s/80s. Everything emissions related on my Eagle was rusted and the computer controlled Carter BBD was garbage. Needless to say none of that crap is on the car any longer.

bilstein set at 1.75, Racho 5000 rear with 4 leaf kit, floor mats, high lift jack, pull hook in hitch, bed rail corner braces, severe duty brake pads and devil horns on the grill....
We started putting those on cars in the early 70's...they used to be fairly small and fit in a corner of the engine bay. There were also a favorite place to transport contraband in small amounts back in the day, since no one really cared what they did or how they worked.

They were part of the sealed fuel systems...

You might fill up twice as much but it hurts half as bad.
