^Very nice looking BRZ. I LOVE that color.

Here's a question for you guys. I have an RX7. I love it. It's changed my life. But it's a 21 year old car and I've considered getting a BRZ. My issue is that the RX7 makes about 300whp and is fast as all hell. I like the BRZ a lot in terms of looks, I can get a new one, and it's got back seats and a trunk...all good things. But I'm a little worried about it's HP potential.

I know there are people with some big hp setups but if it's going to cost a fortune I may as well just keep what I have ya know? I'm also finding out they have severe heat issues once you add a turbo. Any advice? What power level is easily attainable with about $6k invested into a stock BRZ?

 

One nice thing about the twins is you can have all the fun that you want with out have to go overly fast. It's a fun car to drive in stock form. Would it be nice to have more hp stock, yeah it would. But it's not like the car is completely noting with 200hp

 

While I understand this you have to realize that my current car weighs the same amount and is just as good in the handling department; yet has about 340hp at the crank. Soooooo....yeah, the power is needed. Next time I go to the race track and come out of a corner I'll cry because I want my TT rotary back lol.

 

For 6k I'd say you can get in the 250-300whp range without a issue.. If your happy with your 21yr old rx7 just keep it if there's nothing wrong with it. But I'd venture to say the rx7 isn't as good of a handling as the FRS/brz, its a great handling car but these cars have that 20yrs of chassis advancements over it, there's a reason people love this car in stock form who come from bigger HP cars.

 

One thing I know is that there's no other car on the market sub $50k that I deem nearly as "pretty" as the RX7. I'm not sure I'm ready to get rid of my childhood dream car just yet but if I HAD to the BRZ is at the top of the list. I still don't think development for parts on the FA20 engine is mature yet. I'm still pissed they put that junk engine in such an incredible chassis. At least give the damn thing as much HP as the outgoing S2000 since it's supposed to be in the exact same market. Oh well, I'll keep my eyes peeled for swap kits!

The fa20 was completely designed and built for this car from my understanding. Yea its a flat four but no other Subaru flat four has the compression ratio this motor has.

 

It's solid in it's own right but it's not great for making power that's for sure.

The compression is indeed quite high which is terrible for turbo/supercharger applications. High compression is typically how NA guys make power; except this engine doesn't make power. I mean come on guys, a 4 cylinder 2.0L with 200hp was impressive when the year was 1993 and it was in the Honda Prelude. But we're 21 years past that point with loads more technology. Throw me a freaking bone here.

If you change the rods and pistons you'll make power with forced induction but from what I've read, NA, you'll only ever get about 210whp (unless you dump a HUGE amount of money in). From what I've read, 350 is about all you'll get before you need to tear down the engine.

A 350whp BRZ would be utterly fantastic though. I've been thinking a LOT about it lately. The RX7, for a 21 year old car, is about the best kept one I've ever seen. Thus, why I bought it. However, it's a real diva and requires a LOT of attention. I want to be able to have fun in it and not worry about breaking stuff all the time.

 

Go back a few pages, there's a turbo kit for 6-7k making 600+HP and 470+ ft lbs tq on stock internals.

 

Really? On stock internals? That sounds a bit farfetched but I don't claim to be an expert on these engines just yet.

Ahhh you're right. Video says it's a stock motor and they dynod 605whp so I believe it. But, I don't think that motor is going to last very long. The general consensus on the boards as far as what the engine's "reliable" hp limit is seems much lower. Hell, if I can make 300-400 at the wheels with a quick spooling turbo that retains a similar power band I'd be in. Really, at the track, 300 is about all I'd need.

 

God I love the mudflaps....any other brand car it would be hideous. But on a World Rally Blue Subaru, it's love!

 

For BRZ owners, what are you guys taking these home for? I know the FRS is a "no haggle price" type thing but I'm sure there's room for negotiation on the Subarus. I'm looking at the limited trim levels really just for keyless and heated seats.

Yep a 125r I just built up to get on the track again.

I honestly can't remember what I paid for mine, but it did come down from sticker quite a bit. I was just quoted 29,500 for a 2015 series blue brz otd...

 

Nice man! Rode one back in 05-08 but switched to a podium for a few years. Iv always loved standards.
