Another pic of the rim and my three Toyota trucks. We measured the length of the damage so you can see.

I personally don't that is that big of a deal. I got some nice scratches from Discount and refinished the rims myself. I think I did a pretty good job but there is still a few brushes around the lug nuts. I have come to except the fact that when they mount tires, these little things can happen.

My truck is a '14 with 3000 miles on it now. I put new tires on it with 400 miles on the truck and had scrapes around my lugs and I had the same marks as you when they removed the weights. IMHO, no big deal, it is a truck. I say that and I am anal over my vehicles, I take extreme care of my stuff. I am just not going to give myself an ulcer over my rims, heck, I can buy a new set on these forums for a couple of hundred bucks brand new.

I already replied to you post but it just bugs me becasue Toyota has gave me the best customer service out of every vehicle brand I have owned. My local dealer has also been amazing also.

You rim issue is a dealer issue, if you are not happy with the way they refinished them, take your truck back. It is not difficult to do, a hour on the web and I was ready to do mine. $25 at my local Auto Zone and mine look fantastic.

If you take off any clip weight it will show scratches. It is a metal clip that holds it in place. Taking it on and off will scratch the clear or paint on any wheel. Toyota puts them on at the factory that way.

A clip weight for a steel wheel is uncoated and a clip weight for a aluminum or painted wheel get a clear coat finish on the clip weight to prevent oxidation from dissimilar metals. Aluminum wheels pre date stick weights by decades so they must have all been wrong getting clip weights as well. Stick wheel weights fall off more often than clips as well due to improper prep.

Stick weights came around due to wheels not having a lip for clip weights and for aftermarket wheels. It does sound like they used the wrong profile weight if it looked loose.

Guess we all need to go sue now. Have fun winning this one.

I would be more pissed at having AT20 tires on the truck wait until you replace them since they suck and have poor life expectancy. I would hate to be the tire shop you go to.

Really you guys think it's okay for a tire shop to scratch the living shit out of a rim?

Not at all and no one did. A clip weight by design will scratch a wheel during install and removal. Tacoma comes from the factory that way.

No it's not okay. It will happen when the tire shop is mounting tires. That's why I don't work in the service sector. Too many assholes. If you don't like it, do it yourself.

I had a similar issue, all dealers put the weights on no the outside, that's what Toyota recommends on their oem wheels, they make scratches no matter what. It sucks but your only choice is to not go back, they have monkeys installing back there. They scratched all four on my wheels, and had to replace all of them, I had to raise hell.
Do some off roading and run them up against some rocks, you'll never notice the weight scratches.

My Oem rims didn't have those scratches so I find it hard to believe it's impossible to remove them without damaging something.

I don't understand the justification of poor workmanship. It is not okay. If I delivered a $30000.00 refrigerator to your home with a packing sticker on the front, removed after delivery, and it peeled the paint off, would you be okay with that? What if I told you after I did it that it was cosmetic and they all do that? Sorry have a nice day? You would be okay with that?

I didn't cause the damage. I keep my trucks forever. It bothers me. Whats acceptable to some will not be acceptable to all. I don't park my truck where it can get door dings. Some people park up front and don't care about dents. If I clipped a curb and damaged my rims that would be my fault.

The more I think about this issue with the rims it leads me to believe the rims are of poor quality. Seems to me the finish and metal should not have damaged so easily.

I would think that one of those wheel repair guys that bounce around from dealer to dealer to repair wheels on used vehicles could fix that. I saw a Taco at a local Ford dealer that had over 100k miles with your same (sport) wheels. They were in horrible shape. Salt had done a number on them. The guy fixed them and they looked brand new. Just an idea.

Exactly, that is what many have already said. This is such a simple fix, and it is a common problem once guys upgrade their tires.

No one is saying it is ok for a dealer or tire shop to scratch the rim, all we are saying is that it happens often when removing the outer weights. That is why most if not all tire shops have a guy who comes buy and refinishes the rims for them.

Not sure about the tire either since I am not an expert with tires. I have never seen something like that on any tire that is brand new.

Update. No movement with this issue. I received a quote from the dealer for the new rims, balanced, and mounted for about $2100.00. We provided a reasonable alternative of an aftermarket rim which we will kick in $200.00. No word back.

What we know. Since we were going to start the legal process of suing them, to do it correctly I have to file the Arbitration papers first. We don't have much faith in that either so we will have everything in order.

I word to anyone purchasing a Toyota. Research before you decide. After 30 years we will not buy another Toyota. You can't trust this company.

I wish you lived next door to me so I could sneek over when you were sleeping and rub some bondo on that rim, sand it lightly and paint it all before you woke up.

    Dude, that's awesome!

Let's say that I buy a refrigerator from some dealer. I don't look it over when I buy it. The handle is on the wrong side. The frdge is already scratched. Then I figure that I will blame the manufacturer instead of resolving it with the dealer. I won't just fix it, and then take the dealer to small claims court to get my money back?

There's a certain type of personality, a certain style of writing, a certain way of looking at a problem, that reminds me of a guy who posted about a totally unfixable unfindable unsolvable vibration. Fascinating.

If I sand the rim, and refinish then it is my problem. I didn't damage the rims. If you purchased $2000.00 rims and they slapped weights on the exterior of your nice shiny rims you are saying that's acceptable. I call it poor workmanship. It can be fixed. Toyota should stop damaging the aluminum rims by placing the weights on the exterior of the lip.

We are not sure there is a problem with the finish on the rims either. It appears the finish is soft which contributed to more damage.

You made it, you screwed it up, you fix it. In the future they need to get better with the production and workmanship. The only way that happens is bringing it to their attention.

I also have a 2008 Tundra that is part of the "Runaway Toyota" recall. Toyota blames it on a floormat. Give me a break! Anyone with a brain in their skull realizes it is more than likely a problem with the computer management, throttle control. Has Toyota fixed this problem by cutting off 1/4 of the gas pedal, and floor mats? Right! This same Toyota had to replace three radios since you would hit a bump in the road and it would shut off, or come on by itself. The dash also has more waves in it than the ocean.

So my acceptance of dealing with Toyota has worn thin.
