Just got my 01' tacoma with the 5vzfe with 170k miles on it. I'm catching up on maintanence where it had been neglected. Still had factory plug wires, fuel filter etc..
Dont know what kind of oil its had in the past, but they guy I got it from said the last oil change was castrol gtx high mileage. I know the truck will run with any brand oil I put in it, hell its a tacoma, I just want to hear from somebody who knows what they re talking about as to which brand these trucks seem to like. I'll be running 10w30 regardless of brand. Let me know what y'all think

For the price you just can't beat Mobil 1. It's real good stuff. I was tempted to run Amsoil in mine after I just bought it about a month ago but just couldn't justify the price of Amsoil at the time. I "may" go that route in the future but the fact of the matter is, for 99% of the people out there that just drive to and from work or even do some serious wheeling Mobil 1 is all you'll ever really need and probably more than you'll ever need.

If I decide I want to extend my drain intervals I might go with Amsoil but Mobil 1 will run extended drains as well. Just not quite as long.

I have ran Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Syn Blend without any problems. As long as you stick with a API SN rated oil and change it properly, you will never have any oil related problems

That's about the point I switched my 1st gen over to Castrol full synthetic 5w-30. Ran like a top.

The Castrol is a fine oil...no harm sticking with that...by the time my R22E got that many miles, it was on 15w40 Rotella...

And by the time I sold it at 220k or so, it still didn' t use a quart between changes.

    It just leaked a bit.

I just switched from Mobile 1 to Pennzoil Ultra after a discussion and comparison of Blackstone lab report results with Chris 4x4. We both had data, and I was concerned the Mobile 1 was losing its viscosity faster and to the limit of acceptability within a 5k OIC. The Pennzoil Ultra had plently of viscosity left, and Blackstone even recommended that he could increase his OIC.

So I just put in in for the first time about 1k ago. Walmart has the best prices by far, BTW.

I use Mobil Super High mileage 5w30 in my 1998 (211k miles). If I happen to think about it when I'm out near the dealer, I buy a Toyota filter. Otherwise I use Puralator.

I buy 4-5 filters at a time from the dealer. They give me a discount and free crush washers:D
