    Don't do it!!!!! It's like admitting defeat!!!!

    I suggest an experiment. Section off 4 1sq.ft sections. Leave on bare (control group), lay seed on another section, till and seed a third section, and fertilize (springly) and seed the last section. Water equally in the late evening or early morning. Wait and watch. See which one produces the best results and use that method for the rest of the vacant lot.......uh.....I mean yard.

    I did this back in the day when I had grass. I have a tree in the far south side (right out side my fence, about 2 feet away in the pic), and Molly used to love to chill out under the shade, while I was sipping on (Read chugging) a beer and Jager. I miss those days. :(

    You need to get some (ok LOTS of) compost and spread it over your yard, then rototill it in, level the ground out, then sprinkle the grass seed, cover with cow poo, more compost or straw and keep moist.

    Your grass isn't growing because the roots can't penetrate cement aka the dirt in your back yard.
