Spotted this newer 2nd gen, with lots of soot near tailpipe?

Spotted this newish 2nd gen in a parking spot today, looks like a 2012+. I have selective looking for 2nd gens right now, since I'm still in the honey moon stage of my purchase Sunday.

But what caught my eye, was the pre DPF-era like diesel soot caked all over the lower bedside, mud guard and tailpipe. I've actually seen older diesel trucks like Powerstrokes with less soot near or around the tailpipe.

What could cause a 1GR to run this poorly? The truck didn't sound like it was running poorly or out of tune when the owner pulled out and left. There was no smoke on start up or when he left either.

*edit* pic is hard to tell, but there is a fair amount of soot all over this guys bedside, and mud guard. Tailpipe also looks like hes burning a woodfire under the hood LOL.

My first guess would be that maybe they are running catless

Was as quiet as a mouse, meaning looked and sounded bone stock. I would imagine running catless with an OE axle-back would generate more noise than stock??

Yeah if quiet then likely not catless

I have the same exact problem with my white 2012 dcsb. My exhaust is bone stock. The only thing I have done is installed a K&N intake. Mine does smoke a little when I start it up. Once its warm it stops. Hopfully its no big deal. Just got the truck 6 months ago.

    Normal.
Seeing the tow ball tells me he tows something considerable. Had this experience when mine was less than a year old. Lately mine has not show this.

    Ditto: running rich

Yeah, it's a common thing with the 2nd gens. They are tuned to run slightly rich from the factory for reliability reasons...but this leads to obviously excess carbon/smoke. Mine has done it since Day 1. It's actually a little better now with the TRD exhaust.
