In Maine it's a sliding scale based on the size of the tree, the market value, whether the trespass was intentional or accidental, etc.
But since the fines can jump to triple depending on the circumstances, the fines can get very steep very quickly.

Yes and no.... it might if they didn't dump a ton of chemicals on the unit.
If they burned the unit like they used to, then yes, lots of goods nutrients. But they don't, the state and some timber company's dump chemicals that are so bad on the units that part of the stuff was used in chemical war.
When they dump these chemicals it kills everything.

Now 20 years later of them doing this our deer populations are way down and our elk have hoof rot and have to be put down.

No matter what any of you think about not taking firewood out of a slash pile, in the units that the state opens up and let people come in and cut, only the wood 20 ft on each side of the road has been picked up.

I just got an old wood chipper yesterday. Started using it, and the bottom plate broke. Chipper will cost me $100. New plate for the bottom of it looks like I can get one for $150. Chipper will be good for my slash when there is a burn ban, like now. Also good to cover bare dirt and make things a little less dusty.

I love my chipper and my vac for general cleanup.

Also as we recycle all the glass, etc. I run all our paper, veg, etc. through the chipper and into the compost.

So you're saying rotting wood doesn't provide nutrients and habitat unless it's burnt

    That's not exactly correct

I would tend to believe that there would be more nutrients to be found from rotting wood that burnt wood.

Although this is from 2 years ago (my trailer was stolen) we did it again (with a borrowed trailer). I love the whole experience of felling, bucking, splitting, and burning firewood. There is nothing more satisfying than sitting next to your fire from wood you gathered when it's snowing and 20 degrees or less outside. Here in Utah we don't have any "wild" hardwoods so it's pine for us. I only harvest dead standing lodgepole pines because the bark in thin and it doesn't leave as much ash in the fireplace. The pine beetle has killed about 40% of the trees in the Uinta Mountains here. There isn't as much popping and creosote buildup from lodgepole as the ponderosa pine either. Living in the valley we have inversions and are not allowed to burn everyday so I only go through about 1.5-2 cords a year.

Once had a mill foreman request a near "perfect" tree from a falling job. Must have been a special request from a customer.

My wife and I have been working on a wood shed this summer. A friend gave us an unlimited supply 20ft 4x6 fir lumber and metal roofing. I'm not a carpenter, so please don't ask why on the design; we were more like kids building a fort without a plan.

Damn. Why can't I have friends like that?

Looks good, but if you're using regular fir instead of PT you'll want to put some water sealant on those lower pieces. I know you set them on concrete and all, but still...moisture. Of course, you'll want to weatherproof that OSB too, obviously, for the same reason, so it'd be easy to slap some on the supports at the same time.

What did you end up with for total dimensions?

Dont forget to ask local tree companies and city forestry departments for wood, around here most of the hardwood gets turned into mulch or brought to the landfill. I have two tree service that are willing to drop wood off at my house for free... Im spoiled no more felling hauling loading unloading, just cut split and stack.

so tell me, after doing the wood thing for more than 20yrs how do you ween yourself off of it. really tired of the effort of getting, cutting, splitting, stacking, moving, stacking again then burning it. :sadviolin:
granted wood heat is real nice in winter but this dude is done.

You could buy pre cut and split, and then all you've got to do is stack it.
Or you could get a pellet stove and you could still have the illusion of heating with cordwood.
Not sure why anybody'd want to stop heating with wood. Weirdo.

    Go to coal or pellets.
Some of the coal furnaces are awful nice.

    Meh, eventually probably.
My Dad turns 64 next month and he still does his own firewood, from tree to stove. I'm sure that my brother and I will eventually have to take over the more physical stuff, but I think he'll probably burn wood until he dies.
Hell, my grandparents are in their 80's and still heat with wood; my brother and I put up about 6 cord a year for them (They burn a lot more wood now than they did 20 years ago because they're both cold all the time), and we built them a small woodshed by the back door that holds enough for 3-4 weeks that they just pull from for the rack by the stove. That way they can carry 2-3 pieces at a time and only have to travel about 10 feet with it. We take turns going up and refilling their big wood box during the winter, usually after a snow storm to shovel and salt while we're there.

You could buy pre cut and split, and then all you've got to do is stack it. cord of wood is in the neighborhood of $200 - $250 in central MD, I burn around 3 cord a season.

Or you could get a pellet stove and you could still have the illusion of heating with cordwood. $3000 and up for a decent pellet stove, that's a lot of mods for the Taco.

Not sure why anybody'd want to stop heating with wood. Weirdo. Don't care what you call me just don't call me late for lunch ;)
