Clear coat failing on 2010 Taco 20K miles

Hey Folks,
I am really disappointed, I have been a loyal Toyota owner having bought 4 Brand new trucks since 1989.

Unfortunately the love affair is coming to an end :-(

This Taco has 32,000 KM and is a 2010.
The clear coat start failing a few months ago, but it was past the 36 month paint warranty.

The are claiming it is environmental damage. This truck sits in the exact same spot that my last 2 Tacos were parked for 15 years, with no paint damage.

Anyone else know of anything this bad this early?

Looks exactly like the line my OEM hood deflector follows. Did you have one there?
Time to visit a pro shop to see what kind of magic they can pull.

 

I agree, those hood deflectors and bras do more damage to the paint on the hood then protecting them. I had both on my past cars and truck and it looks just like that. When I got my 13' taco I refuse to put one on due to past experiences.

 

No way that's environmental damage. That's clearly a failing clear bra.

 

You must live in the most predictable and constant environment on earth to make a straight line that perfectly follows the bevels in the body lines of the hood.

I had a hood protector from toyota. Not a bra the clear plastic hood stone guard
But I have the same problem following the hood lines around all four edges as well as up the middle crease and on the roof

Pretty disgusted

 

Sucks man but thats not toyotas fault.

 

Pro shop can't do anything. The clear coat is completely failing. It needs to be stripped and repainted

 

Every body shop I spoke with said it was an issue with the clear coat.
Yes the hood protector seems to have amplified the problem. But its not just where the hood deflector was

 

Wow this is the first time I've seen a deteriorating clear with line like this.

 

Time for some meguiars 105, and 205. Then finnish it off with some

$19 collinite 476S collinite 476 super doublecoat wax-carnauba + polymer sealant - high gloss shine + ultra durable hydrophobic beading & long-lasting paint protection for cars, trucks, and motorcycles (9 fl oz)

collinite 476S double coat.

 

No its way beyond that point.
I took it to a bodyshop, he wet sanded it and it still didn't clean up, its all the way through the clear coat.
It has to be stripped and repainted

 

Are they re-clearing it? Or what's your plan

 

That sucks. All the small spots look like something got on it and a lot of it collected at the braw area. Did you go a long time without washing the truck?

 

Sealants and wax are clear coats best friends

 

Thats a direct cause of the deflector,damages more than protects.Seen that plenty.

 

When you say this is due to the "deflector", do you mean the clear plastic kind that sticks right to the hood surface? Or the transparent black/grey ones that bolt under the hood like a weathertech?

 

The Weathertech/Lund/AVS/etc type.

 

This is correct. Its referred to as delaminating clear coat. Soon it will start peeling. You must have a solid foundation to repaint so the failing clear needs to go.

Although my hood scoop is delaminating, I have not seen this enough on our trucks to claim a larger common issue. It could be that the hood was poorly repainted.

PPG warranties their paint for life when its a certified repair, without the need to ever wax. The general consensus in the repair industry is that wax and sealant simply allows you to clean your vehicle easier and do less damage to the paint.

 

I've had my clear for 6 years..I don't think it's the clear bra.
