I'm here at the gym and they have computers here so I'm just running on real quick. I take this stuff called Pro - Nos and it apparently has nitric oxide in it, thats not too good is it? is it bad for you? I just took it for the immense amount of protein. please tell me what nitric oxide does. hopefully its not like creatine.

it increases blood flow through smooth muscles by relaxing the walls of the tiny blood vessels in them

it also helps delay muscle fatigue and prolongs the "puffed" look of muscles after you get them warmed up with a few reps by maintaining the increased blood flow that that creates... supposedly helps boost strength

    Mainly makes you belch.

The idea that if you eat NO it will stay NO until brought into the bloodstream through the GI tract is pretty far fetched. It's exposed to too many chemical processes along the way.

If you were breathing it, you might have a shot. Eating it isn't doing much at all.

i didn't say it worked... those are just its claims

personnally i think a lot of those supplement powders and drinks are enormous wastes of money

.... it is supposed to mimic and prolong the natural release of NO that your muscles already do when you are exercising them

Surprised at the uneducated responses to the thread. Nitric oxide does indeed relax the blood vessel walls, allowing increased blood flow, thus providing increased amounts of amino's and nutrients to the muscles during/after a strenuous workout. Does not affect heart rate, and does not break down in the GI tract when taken orally (the only way to take it). Most commonly it is a preworkout supplement, but with pro nos it is added to the protein supplement. IMO Pro Nos should be taken an hour before your workout for optimum gains. It doesn't have enough carbs for me for a post workout shake.

    Yeah, those are the claims.

NO used as a chemical mediator in the body is produced by the body. It can be used therapeutically through atmospheric inhalation. This is actually fairly common with premature neonates.

You eat it, your body is going to do what it does to everything else you eat: break it down, and send the pieces where needed. If your body later decides it needs NO, it may "reassemble" it, but the NO isn't going straight through to have an effect on the vasculature.

Therapeutically in medicine it's commonly used as a gas.

AFAIK NO/NO2 integrated into dietary supplements provides the body with more building blocks for NO gas within the body if needed. In trained individuals, more NO can often be used.

So I guess where we're getting crosseyed is: These supplements don't immediately result in NO gas suddenly appearing in higher concentrations in your body, but do provide the raw materials for your body to produce more NO if needed.

I think Viagra makes NO in your body to increase the blood flow to the weenie. This stuff may very well have the same effect.

Nitric Oxide swells you up like a balloon for two weeks and then you shrink back down when you cycle off.
