What tuning options at available for the tacoma. I've searched the Internet and haven't found many, all I've found are piggyback systems. Is there a standalone tuning option?

I think the UCON is what most use but last I heard it was only 2005-2009 and since I'm 2010 I haven't looked into it too much more. I'd be really interested in one for my 2010 since I have a TRD supercharger and the ECU flash runs super rich. I've heard of people being able to tune about 3mpg out of the super fat fuel band which would get me closer to 20mpg which would be super cool. Not to mention I'd have more power, get more miles out of my plugs, etc. I'd also like to add some methanol injection but unless I can pull a ton of this fuel out I'm not going to add even more fuel to the fire.

If you don't mind wire in systems, there are plenty. Haltech Platinum, AEM Infinity, and ProEFI.

I have the ProEFI Pro128, wired into a plug n play extension harness. You'd have to have yours just wired in. Call me what you will, but if I had an '09+, I would splice in quick connects/plugs so that I could make mine plug in play. Screw soldering and being stuck with it.

The AEM is pretty much open source, and easiest for user tuning. I only mentioned the Infinity as it is their best stand-alone, Open Source for tuning, and full sequential injector tuning for more cylinders than 6. ProEFI pretty much needs someone to tune it, and it costs a lot more.

Yeah, I need some engine management of some sort too and don't want to pay a fortune.

I made it sound a little easier than it might be for some, but yes. http://www.bmotorsports.com/shop/

They have all sorts of plugs. One would have to install the plugs in the middle of the OEM harness. Then with an aftermarket harness for the aftermarket ems, install the same style plugs, wired to work with the OEM. It would be a a wiring effort, but would mean that you could unplug the aftermarket EMS at any time, and have it back to stock. Problem solved.

You would still need an aftermarket EMS and tune it though. The possibility is there though.

I miss EPROM ECU's from the cars of yore. I loved being able to data log my car, pull the ECU to have flashed to the proper tune and then pop it back in for a plug & play OEM-like engine control solution.
