    I'll bet a nickel.
I don't think he could find NJ, much less slip into Canada.

You guys are assuming he is stupid? Why because he lived at home? Seriously I think he is being underestimated. What if he had an escape plan? Dumped his jeep and ID and everything else. Had a new fake ID and passport. How long would it take police/feds to scan surveillance cameras etc to find him? Ifs he is in the area yet he will slip up,and be seen by a resident or motorist eventually. But only he knows where he is right now. Hell he may have hid himself and commited suicide.

I might be the wrongest guy alive.
But I'm a pediatric psych RN and these are the waters I swim in.
Maybe Frein is not stupid but he is certainly unstable.
And 'insane master criminals' exist mostly in the comics and James Bond.

I'll bet a nickel this guy was noticeably off the rails even as a young kid.

Dad was a career officer. The services are big on a family tradition of service. I'll bet another nickel if the son ever tried to enlist the Army took one look at him and said "no thank you."

I don't get the feeling he dumped the Jeep on purpose. I think he was trying to boogie from the scene and hit the pond by accident. (Survivalist should have had a snorkel. Wouldn't have stalled. )

As for a new ID and passport, again I'm not seeing Frein as plugged into a network of sufficient resources to get working forgeries, especially a passport. Some crap over the internet, maybe. But not 'real' forgeries as in good enough to pass any sort of scrutiny.

I agree he is in a pretty decent area to stay hidden for a little while and there isn't a ton of cameras up that way.

No matter what, if still alive he remains on a road with no turnings.

I agree with you. The crazy are irrational. Like someone else said, he may be already dead. Self inflicted. Or if not yet, he will soon. Reality will set in at some point, and he'll realize he's way over his head. Then. BOOM. Bye bye dipshit.

I'm with you. This guy's inept. It's sad that he had to take a life and seriously mess up another one to finally prove it.

My family has a place up there. This time of year there are tons of homes empty of people but still containing basic supplies.
Crazy or not, if he's intelligent he's got numerous options to hide in that area.

Ditto for me on your thoughts. :)
I think you offer extremely valid possibilities.
Just not sure of his ability to carry out.

    There is that.

When I was in the Corps  30-ish years ago, I spent a good bit of time in the field, including E&E, survival, sniper, all the usual bollocks.
    This isn't 'camping' or 'hiking'.
No homey campfire with the beans and venison on the menu.

We had some truly excellent teachers from all sorts  ;) of places.
Guys who knew 40 recipes for maggot stew, could camouflage themselves as a grain of sand, and kill you 6 ways with an eyelash. :p

One instructor and a terrific lecturer, made the point that no matter how good you are, living in the field off the land and particularly covertly is grueling, quite risky, and truly impossible for any length of time.
He went through a bunch of examples going back to hunter gatherer times, early explorers, oral tales of indigenous tribes, the Japanese soldiers hiding on the islands, veterans from all sides of a bunch wars, accounts from numerous people ranging from rank amateurs in dire straits through sheer accident to truly skilled individuals.
He said it is tough enough if they don't know you are there and are not looking for you. If they are actively looking for you, you are pretty much screwed.

One of the main things he emphasized was so much come down to sheer luck; one slip and injury, a bum tooth, some bad water, bad food, skin infections, or fever will burn you down even if you are the offspring of Yeti and Jerimiah Johnson. Pneumonia doesn't care about your survival skills.

General lack of nutrition, rest, and hygiene consumes the body's internal resources at an unbelievable rate.

Not saying he can't still be out there. Am saying I don't think he can last too long strictly "off the land".

    Well stated nealkas,
I know how I feel after just a couple days of backpack camping. Its fun but wears me out.
It would take some serious planning and execution to stay on the run from that sort of crime.
