I have a bit of a skeptic mind when it comes to a dealer trying to rip you off on something visible and as major/obvious as a damaged wiring harness.

That's your dealer. There are tens of thousands who aren't shady, compared to a small percentage who are. Just like every other industry on earth.

It's amazing just how small an opening a house mouse Mus musculus can get through if it really wants to, and how fast they can chew through things.

In graduate school I did a study on a type of field rat and live trapped them with aluminum-sided live traps. Of course, I caught representatives of all the mice and other small mammals (as well as the occasional amphibian and reptile) in the area too.

I found that if I trapped a house mouse then I had about an hour to retrieve it or else there would be a 3/8 inch hole chewed into the side of the trap and no mouse. I could always tell when I'd caught a house mouse vs. a native field mouse -- they have a really pungent odor about them that can be smelled several feet away.

Don't forget that it is a "Retail Business"! Just about all retail business's will tell you that you need new item's, when you really don't, just so they can make there quota's. Especially easy to do in the automotive industry because most people do not know, and or trust what mechanics are telling them.

I don't know any retail business.that operates on quotas. Sales goals are not quotas.

A dealer who advertised synthetic oil but who used a cheap non-synthetic oil would be guilty of fraud. Not to say that this couldn't happen. Major oil-change franchises have routinely been caught systemically scamming customers -- just search YouTube for the name of your local quick oil change shop and "scam" and you will probably find a news report on it.

However, the service shops of dealers are generally fairly decent. I've owned Toyotas for thirty-five years and have never had a really bad experience at the service bay of a dealership, unlike I have at private mechanics, which can range from excellent to downright terrible. Going to a dealership for maintenance is sort of like eating at a restaurant chain -- you know that you are not going to have the finest dining experience there but you also know that you are not going to have an absolutely terrible one either.

Dealerships are like any other business, some can be very good, most are just OK and a few might be questionable. I think that quality depends a lot on volume of sales and whether the dealership depends on return customers' business. A lot of how you are treated may depend on your attitude too. If someone comes up to me yelling about how they are going to sue me unless I fix their car perfectly in thirty minutes and how they are not going to buy such a piece of junk again and that I'm a dirty scummy weasel for even working for the company then I'd probably be less inclined to give them the best service I could.

Thats exactly what a quota is!!

    Definition:

A quota, or sales goal, is a set amount of selling that a salesperson is expected to meet over a given time frame. Nearly all companies set quotas for their salespeople, as a quota both ensures that a salesperson knows what is expected of him and is the easiest way to determine what commissions are due for that salesperson.

While quotas are widespread in the sales industry, the form they take can vary considerably from company to company. A small business with a handful of salespeople and one or two products to sell will probably set a very simple quota – for example, the goal might be for each salesperson to sell $100,000 worth of products per calendar quarter. On the other hand, a large company with thousands of sales reps and many different products or services may set a very complex quota consisting of different targets for different products – 100 units of product A, 50 units of service B, $1,000 worth of add-on services such as warranties, and so on. In the case of a large company with offices spread out over a wide geographic area, goals for each office will probably differ based on their perceived potential. In other words, an office that traditionally makes a lot of sales and has lots of market potential will have higher goals for its salespeople than one in an area with few potential customers.

I wouldn't say you were "screwed" by the dealer... if the before/after pix are the same I'd think that you are in a good position to throw out terms like "insurance fraud" and "report to NICB".

Interested to know how this turns out. I know that the auto adjuster will also like to know...

I had a buddy with a 2012 TRD Sport that the mice chewed the wires going to the knock sensor. They wanted $2200 to fix It. He let them fix it then bitched that it was a Toyota design issue so he traided it in on a Mercedes, a few months later they got in its engine bay and chewed up wires. I laughed my ass off and said must be a design flaw.

Before you blow your top let me tell you something.
    We see this a lot.
Yes there is a soy base in the wiring. The exact same thing happened to me.
I put a harness in a vehicle and put it out. Next day they came to get it and drove home. Halfway there the check engine light came on. They came back upset as I can understand. Checked it over and the wiring was chewed in the same spot. Like you they said I did not fix the car. I pulled out the wiring harness and showed them.
I fixed the same vehicle 3 times in 6 months with the same wiring chewed.
So just let them do their thing and figure it out.
If they didn't do the repair then raise holy hell.
But I take a lot of interest in thread titles like this.
I want to know what's going on...

Kinda had the same thing happen to me on a 1990 Nissan pickup. Before and after pictures saved my A$$. the dealer tried to hide shotty work under a pile of electrical tape and plastic loom that had not been there before. I never left the lot and the dealer fixed my truck by putting in the new harness that they said it required in the first place. i would not be sup-prized that the mouse is still living in the truck. This happens to Garbage trucks a lot.
