Looking at a new antennae as the hail beat the piss out of mine and i'm not impressed with the K40. any recommendations? firestick seems to be the go to

also looking at hood mounts along with a 2' or 3' instead of the 4. any downsides? i know ideal placement is above the roof line but thats about it.

2 or 3' would be fine. Marc's seems to work great. His swr is 1.2 with a 2' firstick

Hey, we are agueing over something Ben wrote. I stand by what I said. The way it is written does not indicate he has already bought a unit. And what you wrote used past tense, "already got".

 

Just curious. Have you compared them on the same setup? Same radio and same mount? Same SWR?

What is the difference? Range?

No I haven't really compared them based on those characteristics, but I was able to get a 1.1 SWR on 1 and 40 with the wilson. Same setup on the firestik was 1.4. See below for my reasoning.

The wilson is over lighter and smaller, and can bend 180*. No need for a spring, less bulk, less stuff waving around back there. Just seems to be better suited to wheel where it's constantly hitting trees and brush.

 

i do agree that the flexibility is a great thing for wheeling. i have the flexible K40 right now that also bends 180 but because of the lightweight and flexibility the outer shell is cracking and does not hold up to the abuse, exposing the wiring and giving horrible signal.

 

Definitely a different approach to solving the problem. My 3' firestik is going on 5 years old now. Seems to be holding up pretty good to the punishment I've given it. It is hardly flexible at all though. All the 'flexibility' is in the spring.

 

mine is only 1.5 yrs old. which is why i'm most likely going with a sprung firestik and a new mount. i honestly didn't even think i abused it that much

 

I originally was goin to get a Wilson. Where out of stock so got the 5' fire stick haha

 

Yea Joey I really like my 2' cuz I can still fit everywhere with it height wise and it never really waves around on the hood mount. The 2' will give you some more noise than say a 4 foot but its just as clear as my 5' when in groups like when wheeling. Takes a bit of work to get the SWR down but you can do it. I also am using the fire-ring cable.
