Interesting use of a Jobox to build a flatbed around...what are you planning to carry?

 

Hey Nathan. I'm planning on carrying all of the crap that's behind my back seat and in the floor boards. Items like; tool bag, recovery gear, trail vise, etc.

Here's the cross member we put in last night. I'll get more pictures later.

I see you incorporated a hitch receiver to the rear bumper, how much would you be able to tow since i dont recall the bumper being bolted to the frame, just welded?

 

The new bumper is bolted to the frame, not welded.

The stock receiver is bolted to the frame as well. I also ran the numbers on the tube I used for the bumper. I wouldn't hesitate to tow the full listed capacity of the truck.

 

what size tubing are you gonna sue for the cage part of the bed?

you've got me intrigued on this and i'm now designing my own caged flatbed style thing for mine but I think that's my only real question so far. seeing as I've not built anything like this yet I don't know what size I need to get good structural support. It won't need to be CRAZY strong but I don't want it moving at all either

 

The plan is to us 2.0"x.120 wall mild steel. My design has a couple of good braces in the main hoop, but I don't see it withstanding a roll at speed. My intentions are for it to save me "some" body damage from a mild flop.

I've already discovered that I will have to place the front foot of the jobox on top of the bumper so I can clear all of the emissions crap associated with the gas tank. That means I'm going to have to add an extension to the bumper so I don't slam into the box if I back into a tree.

 

oh ya, I learned from my bumper just how much plans can change after you start in on a project. And thanks for the spec ifs on the tubing, I was thinking a 2" but hadn't thought about the wall thickness yet but that sounds sturdy enough.

and I also am not setting this up to be a high speed type cage, just something to get some more usefulness from my bed and keep it from gettin any more damage (already have one good dent )


That sucks on the jobox though! I'm guessing that's just cuz you have the short bed? It doesn't seem like it'd have any problem on my truck, how long is it?

 

I need some inspiration from you guys. I need to put some sort of extension on the bumper due to the box sitting on top of it. Basically the drawer of the box is going to be flush with the back of the bumper. I'm thinking of coming back another three inches with some sort of guard.

I've toyed with the following ideas:

- Flat plate flush with the top of the bumper and a few stiffeners
- Round tube spaced away from the bumper with tubes running down to the bottom as stiffeners.


Any ideas?

 

The second option is what I was thinking

 

Go with the round tube direction and tie it into the sides like the front bumper. Then it would look like a complete exo-skelton around your truck.

 

Round tube, it can also as a step if you needed

 

I was thinking that it could be a step as well. I'll try and put together a sketch tomorrow to get an idea of how it'll look.
