Undercover tonneau on '10 Taco question

I'm thinking of picking up an Undercover tonneau for my new Tacoma (DC SB). The instructions mentioned that you might have to trim or modify any bedliners... is that the case with our Tacos? I just want to know what I'm getting into if I go this route.

 

With my '08 'long' bed no trimming, just put the hardware in the rails and snap it up.... pretty easy.

 

same here on my '09. Kinda a pain to remove because of the size (LB) but totally doable in 15-20min

 

I had to loosen up the bed on my 09. The bed was installed wrong from the manufacture and one hook would touch the cab. Make sure that you check the space between the cabin and the bed. The cover it self is very strong. I put two bike racks on top and the installation took 30 min. No cutting was necessary.

 

The tacoma does not have a bedliner. They have a composite bed.

 

Those of you that have had an Undercover for a while... how does it do as far as far as keeping the bed dry?

 

I just sold mine to a guy here, since it was to hard to get the spare tire and jack out of the bed. But I never had ANY issues with leaking even from a pressure washer. I had to do a little play work to get the fit I wanted, but it was good to go

 

I really like mine. I can get it on and off by myself if I have to. But when the wife is around to help it is a breeze. The wall hooks work well also. No water leaks on mine. The only problem I had was one of the locks was a little sticky. Called Undercover and they sent me out a new set within a week.

I have my cover for about 5 months and we had some good rain this spring in north east. Not one drop inside. The only place that may leak is in the front by the hinges. They sent my cover with one extra door seal at that time was a special. I cut a piece and installed that on top of the bed (in the front), maneuvering around the hinges. Bone dry.

 

I forgot to ask-- can you still use the OEM cleats in the rail system with the Undercover on the bed?

 

you can use the cleats, but it touches just barely with the bottom of the undercover. i also have a toyota oem cargo divider, and it too justs barely touches. no big deal though. luke at truck truckalternations also sells them.

 

Unfortunately in my case-No. For me the selling point was-light,strong and waterproof. But I believe they have something else (smaller cleats) that's little bit smaller that would fit under. Try to look into Toyota catalogs I am certain that I saw something. In my 05 dc I had a ARE painted to match the color. Was twice as heavy, almost twice the money and I always felt bad when I had to put my bikes full of mud on top. This one I am really pleased with.

I have a 09 double cab long bed. I had mine installed by the guys that sold them and they did not have to trim anything. Mine never leaks. Also you can't use the large tie down cleats but you can buy some mini tie down cleats from toyota that work fine. You just can't use them from where the shocks connect to the bed, back to the tailgate because they interfere. I really like it and it looks good.

 

Wow the SE looks nice... looks like some good improvements.

That said, I could do without the "and a low curved spoiler above the tailgate."

 

I've got one and it is great for a tonneau. No trimming but if you install it yourself you will have to get in under it to get the mounts square with the bed. Loosen here, tighten there and repeat.

On my 99 I had a Snugtop tonneau. The Undercover is way lighter and easier to remove. If you have the short bed it will be even lighter! I go to a high pressure wash and some water gets in but very little. Go for it.

 

If you are in the market for the hard tonneau cover, consider the Armor Lid. I bought mine in August and love it. It is almost exactly like the Undercover, but it is smooth underneath. It has a LED light built in and does not leak at all. Mechanics Warehouse offers free accessories with the Armor Lid, but will lower the price if you do not want the accessories (http://www.mechanics-warehouse.com/armor.htm). Price is $550 if you take the "free" accessories and have it delivered to a commercial address. I was able to install it myself in 1 hour.

 

I had one installed on my 2010 DC SB today and no trimming was required. I stood with them as it was installed. The large tie downs will fit on the sides but not after the shock to the rear. $650 out the door.

 

Just got mine two weeks ago $850 installed with built-in led lights.so far no leaks even through automatic car washes.

 

The Armorlid looks good too. Better clearance in the truck box. The Undercover has a light as well. There was also a slim metal/alluminum tonneau but I can't find the link. Do a cost/comparison of different ones and go for it.

 

I have been strongly considering the Undercover for my 2010 DC SB, mainly based on all of the glowing comments here on TWF. So I went to a local canopy dealer that carries Undercover so I could see one close up first hand. They had display samples of both the Undercover Classic and the new Undercover SE, and the SE looks way better to me than the Classic version (which looks good also), plus it has a couple of solid improvements that seem better also. Unfortunately, the dealer said they weren't available for my truck. When I got home, I called the manufacturer for the Undercover, and they told me that it may be a couple of months before the SE is available for the Toyota Tacoma. I'm in no rush, so I will definitely be waiting for the SE to be released.
