Just passed the CPAT tonight for an ALS Fire Department in the region! (Which is a rare type of service in Louisiana) One step closer to my dream full-time job!

A lot of times they can use a radioactive tracer in the blood. Pharmaco stress test to increase heart rate. And an imaging study is then done to determine tracer uptake vs areas lacking blood flow i.e. ischemic heart muscle. You guys probably know all of this already.

Why do chains hang from the axles of most EMS ambulances? Is it a clearance thing so you don't get hung up or what?

    Two possible explanations.

One: A ground strap to keep the vehicle grounded due to all the electronic devices in the vehicle

Two: A pair of Instachains that are like automatic tire chains. All the experience we've had with auto chains have been negative. We run regular chain sets on our apparatus.

    Congrats man!

CPAT is something we are trying to get in place in our state. Of course CPAT weeds out the people that can't physically do the job so therefore there is some push back. Cause... you know... who would want a FF that could ACTUALLY do the fucking job

Yeah... we don't have any grounding straps on our apparatus.

Right? It amazes me how far some agencies will lower their standards... This department appears to be big on physical fitness. I have yet to see anyone even close to appearing out of shape.

The CPAT is legit. I feel that videos of it are not nearly intimidating enough. Recruits need to train for it, and take practice course opportunities if/when available!

Ironically most people fail in the tunnel.

And like you said, there is no reason to lower the standards.

So I am looking into getting my EMT license to get experience/clinical hours for PA school. I am going to apply for a EMT-B course at a CC for next fall.

They also have an EMT advanced course (I am guessing fast tracked & more info) that I can get into if I qualify. I was going to just go for the basic and take everything in step.

Besides ride a-longs, have any suggestions to better my odds of getting in?

EMT Advanced is now the mid level cert. used to be EMT-I. Not sure how you can do ride alongs before you are enrolled into a program, but go to your nearest station and explain what you are doing and pick the brains of the medics there.

I like how there are volunteer EMS organizations over there, which must take a massive amount of dedication for not only the responders, but also the medical director that puts his license on the line.

It's been said (and it's fantastic advice), find some medics to pal around with and ask as many questions as you can.

Best of fortunes to you, man!

I would do the EMT advanced course and make yourself more marketable. My dept won't hire EMT-B's because all they can do is drive the truck. We start with EMT-I's which you can't get now so EMT advanced would be your best bet. Advanced will be longer than the EMT-B but with National Registry's BS now you have to test once before you can test (or may be apply) for advanced. I know that from my partner being an instructor as well as another one I work with. The EMT advanced course is in addition to the EMT-B, you will take both courses. After you get EMT-B you could start working on a dept if they use EMT-B's while you do your advanced course.

It is if the Dept administers it correctly. I've seen a Dept change the way it is done to allow certain individuals to pass it. BS! I wouldn't want someone like that to be my partner. You either pass it like it is supposed to be administered or don't get hired.
