Your post while tragic, has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of this thread and should be moved or deleted.

You may be right, that my post has nothing to do with the topic, but I would say it has a little bit to do with it, as I was trying to explain why we should not trust the statments of the Toyota dealers and their employees. Granted not all Employees, just the few that like to take advantage of all they can. Are you a Toyota employee? Is that why you jumped on my post? Hum?

I think there is more to this story and I feel for your situation. It's unfortunate that dissatisfaction is needed so improvement can be made.
I am not sure of your age but I sure wish I knew then what I know now. I know attorneys that will charge me tons of money to write letters and go through the proper channels to help remedy situations like these. I don't look like a dumb punk like I did back then either, which goes a long way as well.

I hope this incident does not sour you from purchasing future new vehicles.

Again, the leaf spring TSB has nothing to do with the load modification sticker. Is there anyone else that does not understand this?

I don't understand any of it: "reduced by 0 lbs." is bs & very sad that Toyota would insult the intelligence of it's customers. Send the sticker back to them.:p

Short version of Letter I wrote to the NHTSA in April 2009. This is a long and technical explaination but if you want the facts please read this post. I got my new sticker yesterday for 4 lbs, reduced from 290 lbs, so my scales were correct.

I purchased a 2009 Tacoma 4x2 Access Cab truck with a yellow sticker that indicated the Load Carrying Capacity was Reduced 290 lbs. This was a large percentage reduction of the actual load carrying capability of ~ 25.9 % per my calculations. The truck only had a few options added from the base model, I knew the total weight added by the options was less small (< 25 lbs), and the options added after the truck left the factory were only door sills and carpet maps which weighed <5 lbs per my scale. The “yellow” modification sticker made no technical or logical sense. I immediately called the Toyota customer relations and talked to the dealer to explain the sticker and modifications made to my truck. Both were not well informed and offered unsound technical explanations which were easily discredited. Since I had read this website I knew this problem had existed a long time. I was thoroughly upset and disgusted with Toyota and my truck purchase. I am a mechanical engineer and was familiar with the eCFR web site that has Federal Regulations. I found the Federal Regulations on the yellow sticker: 49 CFR 571.110 . I then called the individual that wrote the standard at the NHTSA and told him my story and my interpretation of the standard. I sent all the evidence to him and asked him to get Toyota to resolve this issue and correct my sticker. He agreed that Toyota was in error and asked Toyota to correct the matter. Recently he told me, Toyota " intends to inform consumers and send out revised labels". Key sections of the standard are shown below:

According to 49 CFR 571.110,

S4.3.2 Requirements for altered vehicles. Except as provided in S10, a new placard or placard and label shall be affixed, so as to obscure the original placard, to an altered vehicle that has previously been certified in accordance with §567.4 or §567.5, other than by the addition, substitution, or removal of readily attachable components such as mirrors or tire and rim assemblies, or minor finishing operations such as painting, or who alters the vehicle in such a manner that its stated weight ratings are no longer valid, before the first purchase of the vehicle in good faith for purposes other than resale, containing accurate information for the altered vehicle, in accordance with S4.3.
S10. Weight added to vehicles between final vehicle certification and first retail sale of the vehicle.
S10.1 If weight exceeding the lesser of 1.5 percent of GVWR or 45.4 kg (100 pounds) is added to a vehicle between final vehicle certification and first retail sale of the vehicle, the vehicle capacity weight values on the placard required by S4.3 or S4.3.5 and the load carrying capacity weight values on the RV load carrying capacity labels (Figures 3 and 4) required by S9.3 must be corrected using one or a combination of the following methods:
(a) Permanently affix load carrying capacity modification labels (Figure 7), which display the amount the load carrying capacity is reduced to the nearest kilogram with conversion to the nearest pound, within 25 millimeters of the original, permanent RV load carrying capacity label (Figure 3 or 4) and the original placard (Figure 1). The load carrying capacity modification labels must be legible, visible, permanent, moisture resistant, presented in the English language, have a minimum print size of 2.4 millimeters (3/32 inches) high and be printed in black print on a yellow background, or

S10.2 Corrected load carrying capacity weight values or the weight amount the load carrying capacity is reduced, must reflect the total weight added between final vehicle certification and first retail sale and must be accurate within one percent of the actual added weight. No action is required if the weight of the vehicle is reduced between final vehicle certification and first retail sale.

Based on this regulation, the only weight that should be considered as weight that was added after final vehicle certification is the option CF for carpet floor mats and door sill protector. This is an accessory option that is a dealer or distributor installed. Options FE, CP, and RL were added in the manufacturing plant(I would estimate these options would weigh less than 25 lbs) The dealer states that they DID NOT install the yellow sticker, so the CF option was added after the point of manufacture by Toyota. As stated earlier, the weight of the mats is ~ 5 lbs. According to this regulation, if the weight added is less than the 73.5 lbs (minimum of 1.5% of 4900 GVWR or 73.5 lbs and 100 lbs), then no modification sticker is required. Toyota is clearly adding this sticker to many Tacoma’s incorrectly and with inaccurate weight data in violation of paragraphs S10.2 and S10.1.

So then one thing I could not get straight Seal610. Does the sticker change your GVWR? If it does not effect the GVWR then what the heck does it matter and what the frick does it effect? The CURB weight from factory???

IMHO Knowing your Base weight (Vehicle with full tank + any options you have or will keep on/in the truck.) is more important then anything else. And that will very one truck to the next all the time, why you should get weighted.

My AC 4x4 sr5 GVWR is 5350lbs.
With a full tank, hitch reciver(I added it), bakflip tonneau, my base weight is 4220lbs (I have a scale by my house, its free and its correct) oh ya that is without me but does include some other small things. So with that in mind, payload + myself should not equal more then 1130 with a full tank. (note: If I need to I can take off my tonneau and add back 75-80lbs)

So how does the stupid sticker effect my truck? If they added options like mats its only going to change the "CURB" weight of the truck not the GVWR. Or are they just doing this for those that dont have access to a scale. If that is so then factory curb is 4070 (full gas tank) add the 290 from the sticker So then my truck should weight with out anything I added 4360lbs!!!!! WTF, is the scale off? NOPE!, is there heillum in my tires?? NOPE! SO then with all my stuff she weights less then what "they" say she should/does. That is IF the sticker is to increase the "curb" weight...

And why are the dealers clueless about the stickers? not that many have a clue anyways! Does Toyota Corp even know!

OK so now how many heads are spinning?? Mine is!!

Well if that is what "they" are saying then the only way to decrease the payload with out reducing the GVWR is to incrase the "Curb" weight!

I don't have a yellow sticker, mine fell off and not sure what exactly it did say other then 290lbs..

Got my sticker today........................Double Zero's on it!!!

I agree this is a complete waste of money in postage, administrative costs etc to the manufacturer & results in more money added to the consumer in the final price we pay for the product....................all just to keep some "effing" lawyer from exploiting the manufacturer.

I bought a truck that was supposed to have a payload capacity of 1320 lbs. I want to use my truck to haul cargo. Toyota sells me the truck without telling me anything about the yellow sticker which indicates my payload capacity was reduced 290 lbs or 22%. That is not ethical and I think Toyota should fix their mistake. How am I supposed to know the yellow sticker information is false? If Toyota would have read the regulation, they would not have added yellow sticker in the first place. I had no problem understanding the regulation, and neither does Ford, Chevy, GMC, and Dodge.

The NHTSA wrote a regulation requiring weight modifications made after the point of manufacture to be reported with a yellow sticker indicating the amount of weight added to a truck or RV ONLY if they exceed the lower of 100 lbs or 1.5% of the GVWR (73.5 lbs on my truck). This was done to protect the consumer any dealer/RV manufacturer/customizer that significantly alters a vehicle’s weight. NHTSA was smart enough to know both consumers and manufacturers do not want to be bothered with the yellow sticker for small weight additions. So if the sum of all options/accessories weight additions on my truck were less than 73.5 lbs, NO MODIFICATION STICKER was required by the federal regulations. There are very few accessory options that can be added by Toyota that would exceed this weight limit and require a YELLOW STICKER. If this were not true Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and Nissan would ALL have YELLOW stickers or be violating the regulation. I also checked several new Ford Rangers and did not find one YELLOW sticker. Toyota made a mistake. In my opinion, Toyota’s decision to have the consumer install a new sticker to cover up the incorrect sticker is cheaper than having everyone take their truck to the dealer to remove the sticker and covers them legally. Since they also probably do not have records of the yellow sticker information they put on the trucks by VIN, they are probably sending them to everyone.

GVWR is how much weight a vehicle is designed to carry as determined by the manufacturer and does not change. The GVWR is a safety standard used to prevent overloading. Payload (or “Load Carrying Capacity” ) equals the GVWR minus curb weight. Payload includes the weight of occupants, optional equipment, and cargo that a truck transports. If the curb weight is increased with installed options/accessories by anyone after the point of manufacture, the payload will decrease by the weight of the options/accessories. If you want a list of the the Toyota or dealer installed accessory options that would reduce the payload and should be included in this calculation, they are listed in Step 4 when you build a new Tacoma on the Toyota web site. WOW that too funny. Wonder when I will get mine? and I agree with ya on the waste of money, they should just make a formal public apology and only send new stickers to those who the Reg applies to!
