i would bring it by a shop to have them test the fuel pressure...

or find a fuel pressure gauge and test it yourself...

have you had any troubles idling? does it seem like it wants to die on you?

right before i swapped in my new pump, my truck was getting to the point where it wanted to die on me even idling which was a big tell tale that it was fuel related...

it was confirmed with the fuel pressure test though, so that test should at least confirm or cancel out that possibility...

    good luck

My truck is fairly new.. 2 months old with about 1900 miles. Sometimes my truck takes a while to start when it's cold and sometimes it will start then die off. Starts fine the second go round.

    Probably the ethanol.

im having the same issue recently on cold starts...

my one thought though.. i took my bike to the track a few weeks ago and and dumped the last two gallons into my trucks almost empty tank (93 when i normally use 87) could a combination of the change in octane and large temperature swings cause the hard starting? ive got an 11 with 13k miles on it.. imo this should not be happening and i highly doubt ive got water in my tank... or enough to make this an issue.

I have had a 2008, 2011, and a 2013 tacoma 4x4 v6. They all had the hard start in the morning. Usually around +5 degree Celsius will trigger the hard start. I was unlucky enough to get the 2011 in the fall, and witnessed the hard start with less than 80 KM's on the engine (It was wicked, brand new truck and it won't start). It doesn't have anything to do with what you guys think. The Tacoma's have had this problem for ever, get use to it, Toyota will not fix it. This is an engineering flaw. Your dealership can't fix it. Lucky where I live, I only have to put up with this problem for 2 months out of the year. No problem starting once the temp drops below freezing.

O2 sensor has zero effect on a cold engine it is in open loop. An O2 sensor has to be at least 600* before it will produce any output. Your best bet would be to use a scan tool that reads real time and check the sensors output when cold particularly coolant temp, anything that would operate in open loop. It must idle up when cold to overcome the added friction of a cold engine otherwise it would stall at base idle.

What do you consider hard start? My 97 started no problem in subzero weather (F) and so does my 2011. At 23* it starts like a summer morning. Yes it may turn for a few seconds (gosh some times as long as 8 secs. when it’s really cold) I do not consider that a "hard start".

By hard start I mean you turn the key, and the starter just keeps going and going and going (Engine doesn't start). I got so mad one time, I just left it going for almost a minute, I was sure the starter was going to blow up! hahaha Don't care anymore. After having 3 trucks with the same problem, it's a going joke now. Tacoma's don't start. All my buddies think it's hilarious when it happens.

Then there is some thing simple wrong with it a good shop will be able to fix it. Do not touch the gas keep your foot off of it and see what happens.

Problem hasn't gone away after 10 years, this thread will live forever!

2013 Toyota Tacoma V6 4x4 Access Cab. Still has a starting problem. I'm done my lease on this one in a year. Won't be getting another. I'm not wasting my money having a mechanic chase ghosts. The factory trained toyota techs can't even figure it out. I've been complaining hard about it to them since 2008.

I have the same problem but only in cold windy weather. I use Sunoco 91 octane. I live in south central PA. The hard start is not all the time in cold weather, just extreme cold and additionally with windy conditions. My mechanic has been stumped. I will check with him.

    +1

If you have a strong ignition system, then you go fuel, then air. More then likely you have a dirty fuel filter or your pump is going out. You need to check loaded and unloaded pressure with a fuel gauge its really simple and only takes a dummy about 30 minutes.

Also something to check on a higher mileage car is the thermostat which in the cooler times of the year can stay closed when its suppose to open and that can effect the engine temp which has a lot of symptoms your describing.

usually O2 sensors will cause you to get S*** MPG and you will run super rich which will also foul plugs.

Negative a new truck should never have starting issues I don't care what fuel you run. That's not right at all you should take it in. Those engines are very low compression and are easily started yours sounds like the starter is bad. When starters are bad they have to be headed up before they work because they don't produces the necessary cranking amps.

Lol mine just starting doing that I was thinking it was the fuel pump cuz it shakes when it idles in the morning for a while but what I found out is when I floor the pedal on the road it tends to bog down maybe it's just mine but took it to the mechanic no codes popping up he was clue less just like I was im just waiting for what ever it is to give out but it hasn't it. It's going on 3 months and still doing the same thing pressure good spark is good I was also thinking it might be the fuel pressure regulator. Has anybody actually fix the problem. Let me know. Mine is a 2007 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 with 300 thousand miles I use it for work good truck hasn't giving any problems Except for this but it hasn't left me stranded yet so that's a good thing

My truck just started doing this too it's an 2.7 05 pre runner. Every morning for the past week it's been shaking almost like it's like it's about to die. The shaking has gotten worse but once it starts this whole day I'm fine it's only in the mornings after the truck has been sitting..... Anyone have this issue and actually resolved it?
