Debit Card Fraud - Any Advice?

Someone is using my debit card - I am seeing unauthorized purchases.
This is the second time this summer, in July I had to have my card replaced.

I called a couple of the merchants - I have an address, and 2 phone numbers. One of the merchants said they called the phone number to ask a shipping question. (Are you sure you want us to ship to this address in Texas? Your debit card is from a bank in Arizona?)

I called the Phoenix PD (where I live) and they told me to file a complaint on the FBI's website. I called the PD in Dallas and they said to call back later. I guess the PD's are just overwhelmed with this kind of stuff.

I actually used the address to look at their house on Google Street view. I am tempted to call them, but don't want to mess up anything the authorities might do - and frankly it just doesn't seem like it would get me anything.

Mainly, I just want to know how they are getting my info so I can prevent this in the future. I only use an Apple computer - so I don't think spyware is an issue. I only buy stuff online from places like Amazon.com, REI etc.

 

Have you contacted your Bank yet? THey may be able to put controls in place similar to major CC companies such as call verification for purchases out of Your local area. You may also want to invest in a $25-$40 paper shredder & shred all bills, bank statements, & everything that connects your full name, address, date of birth, etc.

 

Called the bank - they are going to investigate.
I will check on the call verification service - sounds like a good idea.

I shred everything already and have for years. I have only had this debit card since the beginning of July!

just contact your bank. the police will not do shit about it. way too much fraud going on for them to keep up with it.
my wife used our debit card at barnes and noble here in jersey and that night it was used in a barnes and noble in cali.the bank called her and gave her credit asap

Do you have wireless on your computer?? Do you have it password protected?? Do you have a firewall?

 

That's great that they busted the guy. Sometimes the problem may not be on your end (ie you've got encrypted pw's and a firewall etc) but the criminal would hack into your bank's database or your info got sold to a third party with poor security. Obviously at that point there's not much you can do but to carefully monitor your accounts etc.

 

Legally if a banks or any other institute has any type of data compromised they have to issue a press release and send letters to anyone that may have been affected.
