In fact, motor oils can be almost universally mixed, including synthetics and standard oils (that's how they get synthetic blends). Different weight oils can also be mixed, resulting in a viscosity somewhere between the two depending on how much of each is added.

www.bobistheoilguy.com is an excellent reference for just about any question having to do with lubrication (of vehicles).

Yep, you can mix weights, brands, types, it's all oil. Once it's in the pan it will mix just fine.

I don't know about all that, first off synthetic isn't petroleum based, its all chemical & with that each synthetic oil manu. has their own little recipe of chemicals for their product, & with that again it's NEVER a good idea mixing chemicals randomly, doing so you may actually create a reaction that turns out to be a corrosive agent (like an acid), it's not going to be an issue being half a quart low temporarily until you get the right synthetic to top off what you have in it now, regardless of what Oily Bob or Bob the oil guy says, just my $.02

All synthetic oils are derived from a base stock which is generally a petroleum or mineral oil distillate, depending on the grade of the base stock. API Grade 1-3 base stocks are mineral oils, Grade 4 is a crude oil distillate called PAO, Grade 5 includes pretty much everything else (silicone, esters, etc). There is a Grade 6 that is a fully synthetic base stock, but is not recognized by the API in the US, so you probably won't see those around very much.

Most big name synthetic oils (Castro, Valvoline, Pennzoil, etc) are from Grades 1-3. Mobil 1 claims to be Grade 4, but independent testing indicates it is Grade 3 as well. I think Royal Purple uses a Grade 5 base stock, too lazy to look it up right now (probably why it's so expensive).

Long story short, they're all made of the same stuff - synthetics can be blended with conventional oils without creating any undesirable compounds.

I've been told by multiple mechanics to never mix oil viscosities.

The few bucks>not being a cheap ass= piece of mind.

? Why not this way you can get the exact viscosity you want?

Didn't ask. Got a big "NO" three times. It's their profession, not mine. And I trust their experience then to follow some nameless face on da interwebz.
