I don't get why people still use individual "pads" for racks. Its better structurally, and easier and quicker to run an angle the whole length of the rack and tie the legs to that. Distribute that load!

They store it all in “sheds” here. just a 3 sided bulling with a roof.

 

I'm not an engineer but I think the bed rails on a Tacoma can handle a load limit of less than 6 psi, but that's just me.

 

They roll giant black tarps on the windward side to keep it from blowing around...other than that it's wide-open.....they have used that mountain of salt up the last 3 years by February....most of it ends up under my truck......

thats interesting. Like i said it’s all in the sided “sheds” and stays dry.

They use that stupid ass brine/salt water or some shit mix. they put it down before a storm. but most are snow starts as rain the day of or before with temps 33* to 35* and turns to snow over night. so it all washes off the road and dose not help prevent ice or anything. they would be better off just buying more rock salt and using it when we get storms.

I would re-evaluate that loading if you think you are only seeing 6psi.

Using a distributed dead load consisting of the rack itself and the RTT, and a live load of 200# which can be placed directly above one leg (stand or sit in corner of the tent) would put you somewhere around 225# conservatively on the leg/pad.

To only see 6psi that pad would have to be 37in^2. Unless its an optical illusion and that pad is bigger than it looks in the pictures, you're loading the bedrails much more than 6psi.

Do I think it will be just fine, absolutely. But if you're gonna throw out numbers I am gonna check 'em!

I think I see where you are going with this. Apparently I can't read today. That does make perfect sense because the load will not be 100% evenly distributed all the time. 225 would put each support holding about 10.7 psi. Check away man no offense taken, can only result in better finished products.

That'd be lbs per inch, not lbs per square inch. You'd need to multiply that 21 by something to get psi. (I don't know where the 21 came from though and don't feel like going back to find out so I could just be speaking out of my ass here.)

edit: I'm assuming the 21 is the total length of the leg pads and would need to be multiplied by the width of the pads.

 

You are speaking out of your ass here. The mounting surface is 21 square inches, which makes the unit of measurement psi, not lbs per inch.
