Work that deal for a month or 2 if you want., doesn't matter to me.

Everybody who posts here about how they overpaid or didn't get enough on trade in and the dealership is a con artist can remember that the only person who makes a deal there is themselves. They sign the contract, so skip the blame game about how business isn't fair. Pay up or shut up.

A few months ago I traded in a 2006 Ford Ranger at my local Toyota dealership for my DCSB. The Ranger had low mileage, a full bed mat, a hard tonneau cover, and a bunch of other little upgrades. They initially offered me $5k for it. Needless to say I laughed.

I was finally able to get their trade-in price up to $7k but it took some work on my part. Near the end, when they thought I was ready to ink the deal, I reminded them that the tires on the DCSB were low on tread. I told them I'd sign only if they replaced all four. They said yes. My only mistake there, however, was that I did not tell them what I wanted them to replace the stock tires with. I ended up with a set of Runway (GiTi) tires.

A week or so later I was back at the dealership with the DCSB to get the replacement tires installed. I saw my old Ranger sitting on the used car lot. Took a look at the price in the window... $13,700. That was more than I paid for the truck 2 1/2 years earlier!

I figure that they probably sold my old truck for $12k which gave them a minimum of $4k in profit. I have little sympathy for dealers. The good ones make their money one way or another...

    none yet. ideas?
I traded in my 2012 with 30,000 miles, scratches down the drivers side, huge dent in the roof, bald tires and no spare for $27,000 at toyota of dallas

Then they put an icon stage 7 lift and five 17" XD cranks with "33 all-terrains on my new 2014

It isn't the trade-in value I am concerned with, what concerns me is the difference I have to pay,

    AMEN!

OK, so how exactly do you think they make their money? Even the good ones will offer low on trade in's, price high and come down to make the deal. They have to pay the bills you know. They certainly can't pay them with $500-$750 profit per vehicle.

With patience, and a good buying strategy, you can often stick to your guns until there is a day that moving units is more important for them than making money. But, you should expect with such a popular car that you are in the market to find a vehicle that makes you happy, and they are in the business of making money.

The dealers mandate is to maximize their profit. My goal, on the other hand, is to pay them absolutely as little as I can possibly get them to agree to, and to hold their hands to the fire on everything that they offer me to conclude the deal.

When I bought that Ranger, the dealer offered me two years of free oil changes as part of the deal. The finance officer for the dealership somehow "forgot" to provide me the coupons for the oil changes.

I went back to the dealership a couple of days later and asked to speak with the finance officer. I was told that he was on vacation. I therefore went to the finance manager. The finance manager told me that he had no knowledge of the deal and said he'd need to look into it. Over the next few weeks, I went back and forth with the finance manager and, subsequently, the general manager over those stupid oil change coupons. I finally got frustrated and contacted the dealer owner. When the owner tried to send me back to the finance and general managers I told him that I'd be taking my complaint to a local TV investigative reporter.

Odd thing followed, I got a call a few days later telling me that they found the paperwork documenting the free oil changes and had three, not two, years worth of coupons waiting for me at the dealership. Apparently they either found the documentation or the owner wanted to avoid the negative publicity. Later that week, during my lunch hour, I drove over to the dealership to pick up the coupons. I took the coupons promised to me as part of the deal, handed the rest back, and walked out the door. I didn't get into that squabble in an attempt to get something for nothing.

I have no qualms with the dealer making a reasonable profit on the deal. I draw the line, however, when the dealer wants to play games with me and my hard earned money.
