well i finally got me an 04 tacoma last monday. truck has 60k miles on it and runs is great. now suddenly im having a starting problem. its very intermittent and i cant seem to find the problem. i have checked all the grounds that i could find for tightness, all were good. the battery is only a few months old from the previous owner, the connection are tight and not corroded. it happened once the other day and i didnt really think anything about it. last night it did it again and again this morning. what happens is ill turn the key and ill get that annoying little click sound like when you forget to turn your lights off and the battery is dead. turn it again and it fires up. now last night i had to do this about 3 times before it would fire up and this morning it was like 5 minutes the suddenly it came back again. the radio works fine while this is happening aas well as the dash lights and the dome lights.

please someone help me out. ive had some really bad luck with cars here lately, but they have all been high mileage cars. this ones only got 60k on it. help me out.

my guess is your starter is toast or something like that...sometimes you can fix the problem by replacing the contacts (so I've heard, fact check this...) or the relay that supplies power to the starter motor.

I'm no mechanic (and I don't play one on TV), but I also think it sounds like a starter.

Are you SURE the battery is good? Throw a volt meter on it and watch it while someone tries to start the truck.

how much does a starter run for one of these? round-about...hard to replace? meaning tricky to get to? ive changed a starter before on an old cadillac that was a b***h to get to.

The Tacoma starter is fairly easy, just a pain due to lack of hand room. Check the battery first to rule that out. THEN, the starter.

Most of the time, an auto parts store or a tire shop will test your battery for free. I'd give that a try first.:)

I would clean the terminals on the batt first. Kyles 07 taco, wouldn't start after a day on the trails in PA. and even though the batt terminals did not look bad, we cleaned them and its started and since then we have had no problems.

When I clicked the home tab up top, the thread said "need help...good head". It sounded interesting but I have nothing to contribute lol.

well i just got back from autozone where everything checked out fine. battery, alternator, and starter were all within spec. this makes me think that the contacts are going out. would i be better off to just buy their re-man for $100 with a $62 core or try to replace the contacts?
