Yeah, that flasher relay was a bitch because I didn't know if it had any clips that needed removed. Apparently, the sucker just pulls right out. Twisting a flathead would've helped....or it will help those who still have to do it.

I have a curiosity question. I did the mod on my '09 Access. With the engine running and DRL on the small ring of red LED's in the tail lights illuminate as well as the the license plate bulbs. I just wonder if this is normal.

2009 Double Cab with DRL and fog light anytime mod:

Just went outside and checked for you...

With the engine running and DRL on, NO lights are lit in the back - no part of the tails nor the plate lights. Nothing lights up except for the inner ambers up front (DRL).

So here are MY options with the engine running:

    1. DRL only
    2. DRL + fog lights (NO tails lit)
    3. DRL (inner ambers) + running lights (outer ambers) + tail ring + plate light
    4. DRL + running lights + fogs + tail ring + plate light
    5. head lights + running lights + tail ring + plate light
    6. head lights + running lights + fogs + tail ring + plate light

I usually run with one of the first 4 options. The 4th option is kinda cool because there are 6 yellow lights up front (laminX fogs).

I was wondering why my tail lights and license plate lights are always on when the DRL's are on.

I used the relay and jumper listed earlier in this thread. I wonder if the '09 takes a different part?

Veccster, how do you get the various options you listed? I really don't want the tail ring and plate lights on with the DRL.

I know it is a stupid question but, you don't have your running/parking lights switched on do you?

Sounds like you might have a short or crossed wire, maybe in the jumper harness. I think I would unplug the relay and harness and reinstall the factory relay to make sure it is not an issue with the truck. If the the lights operate normally I would look at the harness.

I come from a life long GM back ground, DRL's are standard and always turn off when in PARK or PARKING BRAKE is used. I would like to see that here, although 08 and prev tacoma's seam to work that way.

    Lights are off.

Everything operates normally, it's just that the tail ring and plate lights are on when the DRL's are one. I really don't want to have to disassemble everything. Getting to the back of the fuse panel was a bit of a chore. I am just getting some skin back on my knuckles. :( Before the DRL mod I was running with the headlamps on so I am at least a little better than I started.

When I pull up to a parking place and leave the engine running in park with the parking brake on the DRL's stay on. When I start the engine with the parking brake on the DRL's stay off until I release the parking brake.

I still wonder if the '09's take a different relay or harness than the '05 -'08's?

I installed the DRL just as directed in this thread. Got the factory parts using the links in the first post.

I guess I didn't try starting with the E-brake but, once the engine was running and in park, the E-brake had no effect - the DRL's turned on when I started the engine (with the E-brake off). I tried various things to get my tails on and the only thing that did it was to turn on the running lights. Park or Drive had no effect on them either.

I have heard from 08 owners who's DRL only came on when the truck was put in drive. I'm glad mine isn't like that. It looks cool just sitting there in park with the DRL on.

I got those options by trial and error. Read your post and went out and experimented.

Not sure why yours is different since we have the same truck (just a different cab style).

Since these pictures, I decided against the yellow fog lens and removed them.

DRL mod with switch, rear spring TSB, trans TSB, tailgate mod, snug-top shell.
I had a Camaro (built in Canada) that had factory DRL's.
The bulbs got very hot and eventually start to discolor the sockets. Makes them all burned and brittle looking.

Is there a mod to replace the stock lamps with LEDs?
I don't think the LEDs will work right with a stock flasher, not enough resistance.
Anybody have heat issues with standard bulbs?
Anybody switched to LEDs and what did you use?

    Thanks,

Did anyone figure out why the DRLs are on as soon as the truck starts and is still in park?

I just did this mod on my '06 and it worked just fine the first time I started the truck to take a look at the lights, the second time I started it I noticed the DRLs where already on while I was still in park.

Any help would be appreciated, I really don't want to be sitting parked somewhere with my lights on for no reason.

    For the OEM setup:

Shifter position does not matter. What matters is the Parking brake position. If the parking brake is on when the vehicle is started, then the lights will not be on until you disengage the parking brake. However, if the parking brake was already disengaged when the engine is started, the lights will come on automatically.

Has anyone with DRL replace the flahser unit to LED flasher unit (CF18) and can confirm if the DRL is still working once you replace to LED flasher unit? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I have a 09 that came stock with DRL but want to switch out to LED flasher unit but not sure if I will still get the DRL.
