I doubt that they will ever be making trucks for the North American market in Japan anymore. Not only does it increase prices due to fuel costs, there is a lot of PR value in having a plant operating locally. Note too that 75% of the Tundra and 60% of the Tacoma comes from North American made parts (vs. "American" trucks like the Silverado that are made of only 40 percent North American-sourced parts). The main part of the Tacoma that is still made in Japan is the engine (of course, one could argue this is why the engines are so good while everything else falls apart).

Edit: There are also tax and regulatory concerns that make it more beneficial for a company to make parts locally.

It's interesting how various reports add different things. Most have been focusing on the gas tank. However, The New York Times mentions that corrosion could weaken a leaf spring, allowing it to break and the broken springs could damage a brake line. At least one person actually had this happen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received about two dozen complaints from owners since 2011 but Toyota received its first complaint in 2009. Considering the number of Tacomas out there, a couple dozen isn't really all that many.

I just spent a half hour under my truck inspecting the leafs. I can't see a single thing wrong with them and no corrosion either. I'd say this problem is more likely to occur with those who aggressively off-road their trucks or those in the Rust Belt states. The way I read the article is that Toyota didn't much see the need to recall the rear suspension nationally as it was mostly being addressed already in the regional rusty frame recall, However, those on Capitol Hill were chomping at the bit regarding regional recalls so it became nationwide.

It also seems to be voluntary, which makes you wonder if it's really such an all-fired dangerous situation. Anyone who has been around for half a century or more and has worked with trucks in that time will tell you that leafs sometimes break, no matter what the brand of truck.

Its not that the leaves are breaking, its that they are turning side ways and hitting the gas tank. I had this happen twice with two sets of springs on my own truck, and once with my friends truck. Mine is a work truck and has done some mild off roading. His is a street queen that has never off roaded and has not had more than a few bags of trash in the back its entire life. Weak crappy steel and bad design.

    My taco made the list,
    And I was sad.
    Then something happened,
    That made me rather mad,
    My phone was blowing up,
With a ridiculous argument on a freaking forum with grown men who need to just drop it. And a ninja who needs to go back to doing ninja things... Like being quiet,
    And then I was glad

Gotcha. Sorry I'm too used to people thinking they're better than everyone else on this forum, so that was my natural assumption.

To answer your question, I have those magnets because our country is imploding. I'd like to see it back in a time when every single person isn't only looking out for themselves. It's also to support our military because they don't get half the respect they deserve.

No road salt in Thailand or Australia. That and the fact US media don't report foreign recalls.

Doesn't matter if it's chrome silicon (aka music wire), carbon steel, alloy steel, whatever. All will rust. Coating quality matters a lot more than the steel composition in this case.
