You can bet you'll never see a recall on a Chevy for springs that might fail, that's just good old American wear and tear :)

When the whole unattended acceleration thing happened, Toyota had exactly 3 complaints of such an event with the NHTSA. After that police officer died in the loaner lexus and the media picked up the unattended acceleration story and Toyota issued it's first related recall, hundreds of complaints were suddenly logged. It didn't' matter that it turned out to be a floor mat. Sometimes Toyota is it's own worst enemy.

Why is it that I am not a part of the recall? 2011 DCSB TRD Sport 4x4... Just put my VIN in and says no recalls

Edit: just re-read that a lot of us 2011 TRD's aren't on there. Weird. Thought I might get some free leaf springs...damn.:(

Something was decidedly fishy about that story of the state trooper whose Lexus ran amok and crashed with his friends and family in the car. It is literally inconceivable that a veteran highway patrolman would not know how to shift a car into neutral or otherwise deal with an "out of control" car. Admittedly, the procedure for turning off a car with a push button start is different but who in their right mind starts a car without knowing how to turn it off? Another well-publicized "runaway" complaint was found to be a hoax. I don't know about the third one.

The NHTSA working with NASA cleared Toyota of having any electronic defects (stating in the document that the testing was the most comprehensive ever undertaking by a governmental agency for a motor vehicle's electronics system). Furthermore, they stated that the brakes could overcome wide-open acceleration even if it did occur. This statement made the state trooper story even more dubious.

That the gas pedal cut off recall still remained in place reeks of saving face. I literally have never heard of someone getting their floor mat caught under the gas pedal of a Tacoma and it going out of control. I actually tried to make it happen and couldn't do it.

Some think that the Toyota recall scare had political motives in order to boost GM's lagging sales. If so, it backfired because GM itself is now facing massive recalls.

In the case of the state trooper, I don't think that car could be shifted into neutral in a conventional manner and the dealership had put a heavy winter mat on top of a summer one. People do stupid things when they panic, I once had a weathertech mat get on the wrong side of my gas pedal in my 4 runner right after I had floored it to pull out of a gas station. At the time all I knew was I was rocketing toward a red light and the brakes weren't stopping me fast enough. I didn't think to turn off the key, I went for neutral but slammed it into park, boy did it stop, luckily no damage. During he media frenzy you had trusted people like Steve Wozniak going on tv stating their new Prius took off on its own because he didn't know his model had radar guided cruise control and that's what it does if you hit resume and there is nothing in front of you. It's the Audi 5000 all over again.

Why is everyone calling Toyota and trying to get their name on a list for a fix that has not even been announced yet?

Are you guys really that cheap? or that concerned? or just bored? I don't get it.

Give the company a chance to figure out a fix for it. You people calling them 3 times a day only hinders them.

    Patience is a virtue....try it.

I just called to see why it was not showing my truck on the list when it falls under the criteria.

My 2010 SR5 dcsb is on the recall list. Was planning on installing new 5100,s and new tires before winter. Thinking I will wait and see what Toy does. Hoping for new springs because I have a leer cap and just a hint of sag.

Recall now visible on NHTSA's Safercar.gov site. This document is of great interest:
    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM463494/RCORRD-14V604-5819.pdf
    • 6-lug models (i.e. spring-over-axle) built up to Oct 2010 are affected.
    • In Oct 2010 Toyota added an extra clip to the leaf pack.
    • No reported fuel tank or brake line damage from broken spring in trucks built after Oct 2010.

Based on info submitted by Toyota so far, it's likely the "remedy" will be a retrofit of the clip found on post-Oct 2010 trucks.

^I made a correction to my post after reading through the recall submittal again. Note Toyota has not indicated they've made any material- or coating improvements to the leafs, i.e. leafs are expected to fail as frequently as pre-Oct 2010 trucks, but won't cause collateral damage thanks to the added clip.

After reading that it makes me wonder if Toyota will replace broken leaf packs or just throw the clip on a broken leaf pack. haha (Assuming you are out of warranty). I'm guessing they won't refund anyone who already replaced a broken leaf pack, though maybe if you had that broken leaf pack damage the fuel tank, then they might.

    Just my thoughts there.

Did you miss my post about going through two sets in 86,000 miles on one Colorado, and so far having to replace the springs once on another one in our fleet? You won't see a recall for GM springs because people already expect them to be massive piles and don't bother reporting it when they fall apart because they assume it's normal.

LOL whoever said that Toyota would just wrap the springs with some wire may not be far off from the truth!
