Muffler vs. Full Cat Back System

I have an 04 Taco TRD Dbl Cab and would like to change my exhaust. Before I had a 2000 TRD with JBA headers, exhaust, and K&N FIPK. Cost too much money for the results so I was thinking going a different route. Any experience related issues is greatly appreciated.

1st: It seems to me for the price of a Cat Back system vs. just a muffler I would be getting about the same amount of HP.

2nd: I did the deck plate mod this time with a K&N drop in filter instead of going with a full FIPK setup. I personally think this is a better way to go for th money and gains.

I saw somewhere where a guy did a full test on CAI's vs. deck plate mod with a K&N style drop in filter and saw tha the deck plate mode created more HP. The actual full setup like the FIPK actually reduced HP in a small amount. I will look for it and try and get posted.

Any help on the muffler vs. cat back setup would be nice to know. Thanks for whoever helps.

 

going with just a muffler over a catback is the way to go as far as im concerned. its essentially the same thing.....just alot cheaper, and results are the same.

 

Just get a muffler. When I first got the truck I emaild the same question to "Offroad Adventure" a magzine by 4wheel parts and in short he pretty much said you would get the same hp, mpg. with just the muffler rather than getting the whole catback. It got printed in the mag. and everything titled "Taco Exhast" it was pretty cool

 

I just finished talking to a local exhaust shop and they agree with just going with a muffler instead of a full cat back system.

Now I just need to find the right muffler that will give me as nice a sound I can get with a V6 and maybe add a HP or two along with TQ.

 

alot of mufflers out there are purely for sound...borla/flowmaster to name a couple. i have a dynomax super turbo muffler, and i love it. good sound...but not loud and obnoxious......and it makes power gains too.

 

What is the part number, if you have it? And will it be the same for an 04?

cant remember the model number...as i bought it used from a buddy(member of tw also). i think its model 17731 or something like that tho.

go with a muffler. sounds good and cheaper

 

with the cat back you can just unbolt and bolt , with the muffler you have to cut and weld.

right?

does this do anything to your warrenty , if say your cat failed or soemthing along those lines?

 

yeah...catback is bolt on.......just a muffler....cut and weld or cut and clamp.....i'd have it welded over going with clamps. even getting the muffler welded in at some shop is alot cheaper than any catback ive seen.

as for warranty....they have to prove that the muffler you installed caused the cat to fail........which i seriously doubt would happen.

 

also with the cat back, you could sell your preexsisting cat back or easily replace if you decided against the new cat back.

you could also replace for resale.

i have had this dilema but leaning to the cat back despite the increased payment.

also you could put the cat back on your self.

This is what neslerrah used on his truck 51.99! Not quite sure how he installed in? Also summit racing has a kit for 233.00.

 

What is the performance difference between bolting on a muffler and having it welded in besides obviously the permanent factor of welding? Will the bolt on leak?

 

I want to get this Gibson cat back for my 98 ext cab 4wd. They don't have a cat back for my 98 on ebay right now, why won't this one for the 00-04 fit for my truck? They have the same wheel base don't they?

any one have the dynomax super turbo 17731 on a 2.7. I just bought it because i am getting sick of my flowsound is way to loud and its really embarassing on a cold start. The drone is horrible. I might return it and get the dynomax 17767 because its nearly the size of the stock one and will be not as loud. I wonder what the differance between them would be or if the 17731 will be fine? I just dont want to weld on a nother muffler that sounds anything close to the flowsound.
