ok guys so need to know what this is bc it's making a whining noise only after I shut off the engine and only last for about 5 secs, it doesn't matter how long it has run for either. by the way it's a 2014 v6

So the whinning noise is normal? It's kinda unsettling seeing it's a new truck making that noise. I'd expect that noise from my jeep lol not my tacoma. so do you know why it makes that noise? and is there a way to prevent it?

It makes that noise is because that's how it runs. No way around it. It is a emissions part that you CANNOT modify at all. You'll void your warranty if you do. The engine makes more noise that the smog pump. It winds up for 2-3 seconds when you start it up and 2-3 seconds when you shut it off. ALL NORMAL so deal with it.

My dealer told me that the noise was the fuel pump depressurizing the lines when you shut the engine off, and that it's normal. But our brand new Highlander doesn't do it, just the Taco.

Your dealer is full of crap. The fuel lines do not get depressurized. The sound is normal however. It is the evap system.

No surprise there. Didn't make much sense to me either but at least he said it was "normal" so I went away.

So why doesn't the Highlander make the same noise?

LOL. Ron White says you should buy her diamonds, that'll shut her up.

Any more input on this? I can't believe that the Tacoma is the only current vehicle to have a smog pump, and I've never heard anything like this sound anywhere--my previous vehicles, our current brand new Highlander, parking lots, nowhere. Why does it make this grinding, whining sound when you shut if off?

I believe that it's the smog pump. My question was why other vehicles don't make the same sound.

But at least my poorly worded post gave you the opportunity to smart off, so it all came out good in the end.

There are other vehicles that have the smog pump. some are mechanical and some are electrical. The 12+ tacoma just happen to have a electrical powered smog pump. No big deal.

Different engines have different requirements to meet the emission standards. The highlander has a different engine.
