do yourself a favor and clean your possessions out of your truck tonight. Chances are, you won't be seeing your truck again for a few weeks and you'll save yourself a trip back to the dealer to grab stuff from your center console, glove box, etc. Don't ask me how I know!

Hahaha... I hear you loud and clear! :D

This is my second trip to this circus. My previous Tacoma, a 2000 Extended Cab TRD O/R, was repurchased by Toyota in 2011 (w/ 146k miles) for just over $13k after its frame failed. I took the cash, added a bit more and bought my 2005 used. If they end up replacing the 2005's frame (truck has 140k miles on it), I will be positively giddy! :)

I figure I will see if I can persuade them to install new front axles and shocks all the way around (I'll pay for the parts, obviously) since they pretty much have to disassemble/reassemble that stuff anyway.

From everyone's experiences, has the dealership been keeping the trucks as soon as they determine the frames need replaced?

I think they make you sign a waiver if you take the truck and it needs a frame replacement.

They told me over the phone prior to bringing it in I'd get to keep it until the frame came in, but once I got there they put me in a rental and said it was unsafe to take.

Hmmm okay. I guess I'll just prepare to get it taken when I show up tomorrow just in case.

And to anyone wondering if their frames have holes- if you suspect something, there is probably a hole. Mine was still covered over by a paper thin layer of steel. I decided on an off chance to just tap the spot with a hammer and BOOM, the head of the hammer ended up inside the frame, revealing a hole about the size of a golfball

I drove mine for another 2 months while they waited for parts. They may let you float unless your inspection is due. Mine is in the shop now.

I like to look at the glass as half full rather then half MT. With Tacoma you get a new frame or they buy it back for one and a half X book every few years. :D What could be better:confused:

Has anyone from PA received anything on this or had a frame treated or replaced at a PA dealership? Is so please let us know. Just trying to verify if PA is active. I want to purchase my lift, but don't want to jump the gun prior to frame inspection.

Update - just back from my frame inspection appointment. It failed it. Whoohooo! (Is it wrong to be excited about a failure?! It feels so right!)

They had no issue with me continuing to drive the truck because my frame is actually in pretty good shape except for that one problem area around the cat.

Toyota told me they are ordering the parts, and will call me in 4-5 weeks when everything is ready to go. They said they will install new shocks & front axles for the price of the parts (no labor), I can supply the parts if I prefer to source them myself (no warranty on those parts, but that's a risk I am willing to take), and they will do the clutch for the cost of parts plus 2 hours of labor (better than the typical 10 they quoted me previously).

Based on my experience, I have to second what AR31 said...

The hole in my frame looked tiny, but it showed clear signs that it would be eager to grow with a little more time and encouragement from the elements. The frames rot from the inside out, so it is possible that there is quite a bit of deterioration present that cannot be seen by the casual observer.

no kidding. was it based on retail when they did it? if so, according to nada, i would get more than i paid in 2005. .. before taxes. i really wish we would have had a buy back. i'd go buy a xrunner or something else altogether.

IIRC, the buyback amount was based on 150% of Kelly Blue Book value for a vehicle rated in excellent condition. I paid $24k for my 2000 Tacoma (Extended Cab, TRD, anti-locks, 4x4, 3.4L V6) in September 2000. Toyota bought it back 11 years later, with its 146,00 miles and rotten frame, for $13,650.

Having participated in the buyback previously, and now having a frame replaced, I am happier with the frame replacement approach because my 9 year-old truck will essentially have all new parts in the areas most likely to wear out, and I don't have to go find something new (to me) and possibly get back into a car payment. That said, I would feel much differently if they didn't fail the frame and opted to coat it instead.

    hi all,

in my vehicle search, i've seen a couple of tacomas at dealerships that have been undercoated to make them look more appealing...

not sure whether i should consider buying one of these because i'm concerned that the newly applied undercoating will prevent the adhesion/penetration of the Corrosive Resistant Compound...

is there any merit to this line of thinking...

    thanks in advance

not sure what kind of coating, black tar like compound...
    the truck is 2006
and according to service record no indication new frame...

further to my concern is that the technical toyota fact sheet for application states: first step is to remove all rust and clean down frame before brushing on etching primer...

how can that be done when there is a fresh coating of undercoat???

the dealership claims they applied rustproofing as per instruction...

yet, when i checked the inside of the frame with my finger in several places the frame was dry and clean...

IF the dealer is so sure of the frame..... have him add a clause to the bill of sale that they will stand behind the frame for xx years and replace if hole penetration is xx millimeter wide. I bet they will not and you will get your answer.
