Could I use ticker engine oil (20W 50 ?) in my 2008 tacoma, living and working in very warm climate (40 ° C and more in summer)

And what about changing motor oil every 3k miles instead of 5k ??
(severe conditions, rough roads, lot of dust,...)

Thanks a lot for any advice

Changing the oil and air filter more often would be a good idea and look in the owners manual for the oil recommendations

He's talking about in 110 plus heat. Maybe a 5W/10W-40 synthetic?

I live in Phoenix with high temps constantly around 115F 45C and have never thought I needed a thicker oil. What do you think you'll gain from a thicker oil?

Just worried to keep my truck OK.
    I think 5W30 works between 30C below and + 35C.....

And I just thought it could be help to use heavier oil because I don't need really an oil grade for negative temperatures, but above all for very hot weather.

Are temps very high all year round in Arizona ?

    Thank you.
I change my air filter every 2,000 and meanwhile I clean it every week in dust season.

I plan to replace engine oil now every 3,000; I think the engine will appreciate

You speak better English than I speak Spanish or any other language so you don't have to apologize to me. Nice to hear from other parts of the world.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
When outside temperature dips below 60 degrees use multi-viscosity oil. I assume Paraguay is always above 60 degrees so it would be possible to use straight 30W, in your case. [IMG]

there is a great write up about oil (here in the forums)--you will need to do a search--good knowledge that everyone should read.

Keep your air filter clean. Change oil every 5000 with 5w30 synthetic or what the manual suggests for the temperature in your area. Synthetics resist thermal breakdown better than any dino oil. If your air filter is clean and working the inside of your engine will not have abnormal buildup of particulates (anyway that is what a filter is for) If you're still worried, on your next change draw a sample and have it tested:thumbsup:

I suppose you could use thicker oil but I don't understand why you would want to or what the possible benefit would be. Even with higher ambient temperatures, as long as your engine is not overheating, I really don't think there would be any benefit to using thicker oil -OR- changing the oil before 5k miles. Just do what the manual says. Follow the severe service schedule if it applies to your driving.

Doesn't the recommended viscosity chart in the manual show 5w30 covers all temperature ranges (arrows on both ends)?

    5w30 covers temps from - 30C to + 35C
Here between October and march temps are constantly above 35 or 40 C...

The coldest temp I've seen since living in the Phoenix area has been 0C in the middle of the desert. I'm from a cold weather climate and to me thats nothing.

On a side note the engine shouldn't be operating any hotter. The coolant should be around 86-88C (thats what I've seen with 43C average highs) and I don't know what the oil temp is but I would imagine no hotter than 93-121C. I would assume the 5-30 should be fine under normal operating temps (which the coolant should maintain at the 86-88C) regardless of air temperature. I can only see the cold start being affected by the thicker oil. Feel free to correct or educate me if im wrong.

In the 40c- 100 to even 110 F range you're ok with 5w30. Your bigger concern is dusty/dirty conditions which will contaminate oil quicker. More so if you run poor fuel occasionally. Clean oil FLOW thru enigne parts is more important than thickness.
3k oil change/filter should be considered as it doesn't matter which oil you choose if it's filthy/gritty. Keep oil full, even to 1 centimeter or so above full on the dipstick which allows a bit more cooling. If you have the towing package which includes an engine oil cooler it'll help
And check the air filter and a/c filter frequently.
