Yesterday on the way home from work I noticed my truck was making a rattling/vibration noise under throttle, both in neutral and drive. Had a scheduled oil change today, so I had the dealer look into it. Apparently I have a bad catalytic converter and Toyota has been notified, I'm assuming to see how they want to go about fixing the issue.

My Tacoma is a 2013 with 21,500 miles and I've owned it about 13 months, it's also a 2.7 auto sex machine.

Has anybody had their stock cats fail so soon like this? Not my realm of knowledge as to how/why they fail, but mine did and now it rattles like a baby rattle with some metallic chunk bouncing around the exhaust.

I haven't had any noticeable difference in performance or MPG, and my engine had no codes.

That's not something that normally goes bad. You're lucky yours didn't get clogged and cause serious acceleration problems.

Had valve springs replaced under recall and on assembly had a misaligned rocker arm over the push rod on #1 cylinder, which didn't provide enough lift at speed and would trigger the computer to go into limp mode to prevent a misfire.

Were there any codes? Or do you think they are bad because there is a noise? If they are bad there will typically be an accompanying rotten egg smell near the exhuast at all times whilst running.

There has been a long issue with the 2.7 (sex machine) since the 1st gens that causes some heat shield to rattle under there. My '14 PreRunner I just traded had a bad rattle under the exhuast, the noise was elevated when the A/C was on. Check to see it's not that first.

That sucks. Hopefully it'll be problem free from now on.

I notice an occasional rotten egg smell from mine when it's in my garage. It's very distinct smell. Mines a v6.

No codes at all. I went for an oil change and had them check the rattle noise out that started yesterday, or at least that's when I noticed it. I assumed it was the heat shield, but when I picked it up today the service manager told me it was a problem internally with the exhaust and my inspection print out said bad catalytic converter.

Haven't sniffed my tail pipe but haven't noticed a rotten egg smell, per se... I have noticed on several occasions a bad smell, almost like hot brakes, but smelled all my wheels and didn't smell a source so I assumed it was just highly coincidental that I was around other cars that smelled at those times. Never thought it could be exhaust odor, so I never smelled it.

happens alot on older cars but not new ones. its just ceramic in side like a honey comb and a big chunk broke off and now is rattling.
they will fix it asap as its cover under the emissions warranty. weird harmonic vibrations is the cause of the brake
if you notice the warranty goes to 80k
most cats die right around 100k

cali is the worst cause of our fuel. you can thank c.a.r.b. for that.

Hard to believe that with a defective CAT it hasn't coded yet. If it just unbonded from the inside of the housing I guess it could still work but just rattles. That must be the issue.

Cats do die. I recommend you find a stray one to replace it with. Shoving the exhaust into the cat is a different matter.... he will fight but once you get both ends attached it is smooth sailing.

Seemed a little sluggish last night, but no codes being thrown still so maybe it's my butt dyno.

Really hoping this kind of stuff doesn't keep continuing to happen on this truck. Would hate to think this is a hint of what the future holds.

CAT went bad on my 2006 with low miles but I had the rotten egg smell.

Was that under warranty? Did they replace the whole exhaust or just the cat(s)?

My 2010 AC 2.7 id the same thing, rattled like a mofo and it was replaced under warranty. I think mine was also in the 20,000 mile range. I also had slow and high speed vibes that new tires and countless balances couldn't get rid of. Plus I had terrible mileage, 17 was the best I saw highway, my 2008 would easily get 22-23 on the same stretch so I finally sent that truck down the road.
