The NHTSA forced Ford into doing the recall. Recalls can be voluntary (initiated by mfr) or involuntary (forced by NHTSA).

Not aware of any involuntary recalls recently. When the mfr objects to the recalls, the NHTSA just goes public with the info and let the media exposure do the work. Case in point was the Jeep fuel tank recall.

That springs looks fairly flat . How much weight in the bed?? IF it was empty I'd not want to see it when filled to max weight

It isn't difficult to come up with a small C-shaped drill jig that wraps around the individual leaf. Distribute one jig for each dealer. In lieu of the rivet, just specify a nut and bolt torqued to spec.

During the floormat debacle, there was one recall (Tacos not affected) where the CTS-manufactured pedals were not releasing fast enough. Toyota did a crapload of testing to validate a plastic wedge to be installed in the pedal assy, which changed the force balance just enough to fix the issue, rather than replacing the pedal assy for everyone.

I come from the diesel truck world where you clamp over load springs regularly for traction and axle wrap. Its very common. You wont find a pull truck that isn't clamped.

Materials can be picked up for 25-30 bucks from Tractor supply. I had my leafs clamped on my old truck. Planned on doing this truck but then this whole recall thing came up so I'm waiting to see how this all pans out. Probably would help a lot of people with their sag as well.

Doesn't that essentially eliminate all the articulation from your leaf pack

Tire rotates one way. Spring pack rotates opposite direction. Leafs in rear separate, leafs in front compress.

Putting a clamp in the front will increase spring rate only. Putting one in the rear will reduce axle wrap under hard acceleration.

The springs on my chevy 2500hd without clamping were 10x stiffer than this Tacoma and I had the front and rear clamped with no issues. That's with heavy towing, hard acceleration, and 1006 lb/ft of torque. IMO these Tacoma springs could use some stiffening up.

Maybe under acceleration , I'm talking about articulation Ie drooping the rear tire

Tell that to the people who approved having our gas pedals cut down to prevent 'unintended acceleration'

    Yup...we're getting an extra clamp.

Another document added to Safercar.gov filing: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM463732/RCMN-14V604-1797.pdf

So if you get a broken leaf now, you should be able to get a replacement leaf pack installed at the dealer free of charge. :)

Hello, old new guy here. My Taco Vin makes the cut for the recall, whatever it be. I liked the bailing wire comment. The 3 leaf system on my 2006 is a joke. Had to do the tire patch fix to stop the squeek at 30K. At 50K they look flat as a pancake. I went through this crap with my '95 4Runner and the ballpoint pen rear springs in it. I put some big Moogs in it and improved the ride a lot. I'm hoping for the 4 spring pack, I'll even pay the difference. Get it together Toyota.

This seems to say that if a used vehicle has a broken spring then the dealer should repair it before selling it, which I thought they would do anyway.

It could also mean that the recall gets performed on the vehicles. So whatever the recall fix is - that's what will probably get done - ever if it's only just a clip.

Of course a buyer that sees or knows about the spring issue - would be prudent to have the springs changed as a condition of sale.....

If you want to haul, get this: For good off-road flex, get this: Keep in mind a set of Toyota 4-leaf packs at the dealer is about $1000.
