I think its also worth mentioning where those recalls were. If manufactures have a few major recalls hiking up their numbers, I say "ok well its still a solid platform besides this"

If a manufacturer has a bunch of little things going wrong, I see they as them being lazy.

But a recall is a recall. I still find the Honda Minivan badge placement recall funny

Long but excellent discussion with GM and journalists about building the Colorado, its design, the future of the truck, and GM's plans for taking on the mid size market.

That's such a bad source of info and it's not even using NHTSA sources. Here's what they said themselves:

To get an idea which automobiles have been called back more than the rest, a look at the “potentially affected” list from NHTSA recalls is instructive. A graphic from the FiveThirtyEight blog displays the list of the most potentially recalled vehicles since 1990. It is unlikely the total number of vehicles (all in the millions) were recalled in every case. Nonetheless, a recurring appearance on the list is noteworthy, even if the longest (and best) selling nameplates are bound to take precedence due to sheer sales volume.

Based on a blog LMAO!!! Even they admit the vehicles on the list were not even recalled in EVERY case.

Read the blog. The data is direct from NHTSA compiled data.

Reading that "blog" the author basically says I can skew the info to my liking. That data is faulty. There is no possible logical explanation why 8.7 million Mercury Topaz could be subject to potential recalls without a higher number of Ford Tempo being similarly affected. It's a faulty list with faulty data. Try again.

What is getting recalled? Using the NHTSA data, I can identify each recall campaign in which a given make and model was potentially affected, and in that campaign how many of the make and model were potentially affected. For all recalls in which NHTSA supplies disaggregated make and model information (4,876 since 1990)

from that Chevy video I just saw Toyota definitely has a few things to Think about.
I'm not down with the cheesy tires and the shutters on the front end but they definitely have some good things.
but in the end I would still not read my truck for a brand new chevy

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
GM is still garbage when compared to Toyota and FoRD.
You should know better. Your 2014 Sierra is named most recalled vehicle in a year.
    So let's compare.
In 8 years I had 3 recalls on my Tacoma
In a year you had 6 recalls on your GMC Sierra.
    :D
Colorado could not even leave dealer lot. Talking about junky Quality.

Overall quality of vehicles in general have steadily declined over the years. When you step back and look at them as a whole it is clear that auto makers shoot for the lowest acceptable standards when it comes to consumer vehicles. This is evident in some of the cheap metals used on our trucks, half-ass paint jobs, poor gas mileage, lack of fairly standard features, etc.

That said, Chevy/GM definitely seems to be earning a reputation when it comes to low quality standards and frequent recalls. Their trucks have never been on my short list for that very reason, even though their new Colorado does look like a nice mid-size truck.

I think what your saying depends on what time period you are comparing.
The great muscle cars of the sixties will get there ass smeared in speed and handling by todays autos.
Still beautiful and highly collectable cars.

No time period was worst than the late 70s and early to mid 80s.
But people still collect those Corvettes, Camaros and mustangs.

I can not defend todays paint, I'm sure clear coat, application and cost have a lot to do with it.
The paint does look better than it did in the 70s and 80s.

Thinner metal is and has been happening for 40 years by all manufactures.
Cost I'm sure is an issue but so is weight savings.
    Less weight = better mileage.

Gas mileage has done nothing but improve over the last 20 years.
I'm afraid if anyone has dropped the mileage ball, it would be Toyota and the Tacoma.
The hated GM is making incredible improvement in mileage.

Standard features have also increased greatly.
We don't consider things like anti lock breaks and air bags as improvements but they are.
I believe they are standard on all autos..
Some models cannot be purchased without power windows (Camaro).
Can't remember the last time I saw a car come off the assembly line with and AM radio and one speaker in the dash.
Can you still get an automobile without A/C?

I don't things are as bad as everyone is making them out to be.

What I don't understand is why has Toyota not solved this frame rust problem.
It has been going on for 15 years.

Closer to 20 years are under the frame recall's over the past few years. 96+ Tacos had it too. The leaf spring issues were from 2005 and now 10 years later there is a recall. Toyota hasn't killed anyone yet like GM but that is luck. The first gen tacomal had their frames snap while driving, and a leaf hitting the gas tank is a recipe for disaster.

All manufacturers are cutting corners on their vehicles, and on the fixes for the vehicles problems.

If you have it and use it long enough, something will go wrong. I know 84-88s that had bent leaf springs, I bent my 02 tacomas rear leaf spring and my brother snapped his 95.5 tacomas rear leaf spring while driving a couple years after I bent my 02s. Ive seen both bent and snapped 05 tacoma springs. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I can say mine are worn out.

They already had a tsb for rear leaf springs, but it ended. Atleast toyota is willing to admit something may go wrong. Im sure enough people cried, so they listened. There was a tsb for weak tail gates. It ended and then my tailgate bent. Im sure if enough people cried that the tailgate may bend, may not latch properly, and may fail…then toyota will step up and remedy the situation.

Chevy would be the type of manufacturer that will sell a vehicle, and even if the inner drivers door handle broke within the first year of use on most sold, would say it is not a safety issue and is something that happens normally through use.

I blame the cheapening of vehicles on the Govt and not the manufactures, when the federal Govt steps in and says rear camera, stability control, tpms..etc..etc have to be standard options they have to cut costs somewhere. If a Tacoma has to hit a certain price point they cannot add all those features and maintain that price point so they cut costs in other areas to make up the difference.

Just another opinion from recent experience, no other brand appears willing to offer a base four wheel drive truck in the U.S. anywhere near as economically priced as the current Tacoma and that is why a 2015 now sets out in our garage.

    Survive? Without a doubt.....
