    Yep rear first is a good option.
    My 4cyl. truck is the slowest out of all yours. And I will smoke most guys in the dirt. Worry about suspension first. Proper suspension set up will make you go the fastest.
    We tested a class 1 car in Barstow last weekend. After all day of shock tuning, he gained 15 MPH by the end of the day. Didn't touch the motor.
    Unless you are a street racer or going for Mall Crawl award, throw a Super Charger in there

    Glad it's working. Small suggestion. Invest in a GOOD multimeter. Any modern meter has a continuity tester that would have been able to find the bad fuse in 5 minutes. I've been using the same Fluke for over 10 years. Money well spent.

    i think i remember somebody on here saying that some company (maybe dirt designs) was looking into a solution for our shitty steering racks. any word on this? would love to get something more powerful and stronger.

    There are three options:

    1) Run a swing steering setup with a saginaw steering box or similar

    2) Run a big boy rack like a Howe

    3) Run a stock rack with a slider to take the stress off the rack

    I'll be doing option 3 here in the next month.

    slider won't work because of how the crossmember is on the 2nd gen tacoma's

    i don't think running a swing steering setup will work either absolutely no room for a steering box.

    only way a howe rack would work is by cutting out the very front cross member and rebuilding it lower to it the huge ram and tierod slider thing they use.

    how about a double ended ram like they use on rock crawlers? with an orbital valve mounted on the frame where the stock steering shaft comes out of the firewall. would be pretty low profile compared to a howe rack. only problem is you need a mechanical link to the front wheels from the steering wheel to be legal up here. and i would need some sort of steering wheel stop so i don't break the clock spring in the steering wheel.

    With a hydraulic ram like that you would loose all "feel" to the steering.

    A steering box with swing arms would be ideal in that regard and pretty bulletproof. It will fit, but it will be a custom job.

    A slider can work on a second gen, you can put it anywhere. And a box can fit also. Not sure why you think neither would work. None of the options are bolt on. Rock crawler Hydro steering have no place in high speed trucks for countless reasons.

    yeah i know but i want to be able to turn and run hard without wrecking steering racks, plus being able to turn 37's in the rocks would be nice. got me thinking a bit more though. maybe a saginaw box will fit inside the frame rail, build some custom swingers all mounted on the inside of the frame rails or on the outside if the tires don't get in the way. wouldn't need any sort of ram assist either with a saginaw box and a high pressure ps pump.

    edit: just went and looked under my truck and the box would definitely have to be mounted on the outside of the frame rail. and there may be just enough room for a swinger setup mounted inside the frame rails. could also look into making a 86-88 toyota ifs box work. might be easier.

    The 80 series land cruiser also used a outside the frame box. Either way you'd have to build a full dual swinger setup to get the geometry correct

    Yeah I realize that. Would need to aquire he help of my local offroad fab shop thats for sure. I can sleeve/plate the frame and mount the box. But the swinger setup is going to be the hard part.

    79-85 would be easier to find. Those guys always upgrade.

    79 to 85 box wont work. They bolt on top of the frame and the pitman arm swing along the frame. Pickups that came stock with solid axles used a push pull steering box with a j-arm on the knuckle.

    I don't see how a steering box from an old mini truck will help push your 37s..seems like a small box to go with.

    could use a ram assist pretty easily. Plus the box has to clear the tires at full steering lock and bump. Probably going to sell my +2 kit and go with mcm's kit with hiemed uppers, so the 1.5 extra width will help.

    If you build your own mounts and pitman arm it doesn't matter where the box was meant to be mounted. Once again don't think this will be bolt on or simple

    I realize that but the 79-85 box is definitely not an option. I will swap my kit out and get the 37's then look into the steering more in depth and talk with my local shop. Definitely got the gears turning though.
