Yeah, in addition to politics, we're not supposed to talk about illegal immigration either. So.....

Let me just be vague by saying that I believe we have too many "cans" here. There's a big problem with plastic water bottles in the pacific ocean, but we have too many "cans" here.

No? Perhaps not. Along with aluminum "cans" there are plenty of other things like plastic bags and radioactive waste that we have too much of.

It's not as contagious as HIV.

You can only spread Ebola after you start to show symptoms and they show up quite violently. Then you tend to go to the hospital quickly or die. Time until death from the infection is typically 8 days later after the first symptoms. When your puking and shitting your guts out people will tend to keep their distance especially in Western countries.

My understanding regarding sweat/coughing is that the viral load is very very low in those methods of transmission until you are very very sick and would likely be in care any ways.

HIV spreads like crazy because you can carry it for a longggggggggggg time before you know you have it.

    The better coast
where did you pull that from?

Most likely unsanitary conditions, nonhygienic people, and too many people crammed into an area.

50% mortality rate in Africa, contracted by contact with bodily fluids from those that are sick and/or deceased, it can survive for 70 days in semen (not substantiated). There is not a air borne variant (yet).
I'm not to worried about it.

    The Dust Bowl
One reasons the disease is spreading in Africa is ignorance. Many village cultures have a tradition of laying on hands to "cure" the sick and of bathing the dead, which of course is the last thing you want to do with those infected with Ebola.

I hope the Dallas patient was a wake-up call for American authorities because their initial handling of the situation was abysmal (and I'm not just saying this off the top of my head -- I have had emergency response training and experience as an army medic and civilian paramedic). I blame the officials involved as I know darn good and well that America has a good many individuals highly trained in infectious disease control.

A month ago the word should have been passed down from the federal government through the state and local levels to pay special attention to those patients with flu-like symptoms who were from or had traveled to certain areas of Africa. That the man in Dallas was sent home from the hospital with antibiotics was unconscionable, besides the fact that antibiotics are useless versus viral infections (unless the media mistakenly, or ignorantly, called anti-viral drugs "antibiotics").

It seems that private organizations are quicker to take responsibility than governmental ones. The police showed up late to the quarantine, nobody thought about how the people in the apartment were going to be fed and it took several days to get a cleanup crew involved and they were initially sent away because they didn't have the proper permits. Meanwhile, the residents of the apartment had to remain inside with body-fluid soaked bedding and towels.

Things finally are getting done but the Red Cross and a local church seem to be helping out as much or more than anyone.

Read a few weeks ago that an Ebola survivor...if its a male..will continue to carry the Ebola organism in his sperm for several weeks after recovery from the illness. Just thought that was interesting.

Like it or not, that's the rules and the last thread only had a couple of people who couldn't abide

What's funny is when someone isn't able to discuss a topic that actually has very little to do with politics without bringing them into it...our guns and hunting section does just fine without politics
