The "Villas" I live in prohibit me from working on my truck even if it's in my enclosed garage. Helped a friend "derp" his wheels and got 3 written complaints from the board. I hate HOAs...

Close the garage door and be careful not to spill liquids.

I plan on moving in a year or so. Just wanted to rant and see if anyone else had this issue.

Lots of HOAs have this type of rule in place, however it will depend on the neighborhood and when you do the work as to if and when someone will complain

Be very careful violating HOA covenants, because (at least here in SC) they can fine you and then when you don't pay the fine, they can place a lien on your house

They can't say that if you own, if you rent and it is written into your lease then they can enforce it. There are laws about chemicals and gas cans and LP gas etc in " multi unit " buildings though.

HOAs are usually run by a bunch of rich "old ladies" with too little to do and too much time on their hands. My sister bought a 90-acre plot on an old ranch that had been split up and sold piecemeal. The people living there are mostly retired Wall Street brokers, judges and over-the hill debutants. They have an HOA that does little but argue with each other and file lawsuits. The county is involved in the shenanigans too as they don't seem to like the "newcomers." Recently they decided that people in that development should start paying $15 per bag for collecting their trash. I thought my sister was making this up until I went to the county website and read the ordinance.

I deal with about 120 HOAs on a monthly basis...very few are run by a bunch of rich old ladies

Most of them are well meaning and just want to keep the neighborhood looking nice etc, but occasionally they get a little overreaching or forget the spirit of the rule etc etc

That's completely insane that they won't let you work in your own garage. The HOA in my neighborhood is largely useless. We have private roads so other than collecting dues to do road maintenance and maintaining the landscaping at the entrances, they have no other power. It's kinda nice.

Your board decides the HOA rules and enforcement. All it takes to change is a guy who wants it and has the power to persuade the others.

They absolutely can say that if you own. Even making stupid rules like your grass must not be too long or too short, can't paint your place certain colors, endless commi rules.

Good point. My mom is on the BOD of my HOA and people regularly bitch to the board about 4Wheelers, trespassing, blah, blah, which we don't have rules against.. We all have about 10 acres of land and private roads.
My HOA tells them to call the police or run for the board of they have a problem

Yes, and while HOA boards made up of your neighbors can turn political and bureaucratic because POWER, they're not impenetrable. So to you guys who have shitty HOAs and also to those who have really mellow HOAs, consider your involvement in the board as an option since HOA rules can either be your friend or your worst nightmare, and literally all it takes is one person who wants to control things. If your neighbor moves in and decides he doesn't like your lifted Tacoma parked on the street in front of your house, then it's a matter of time before he gets that rule established if he's motivated. You need to be equally motivated to protect your own interests.

I stand by my statement. I used to work for a maintenance company that had contracts with several HOAs. My aunt also had run-ins with her HOA. She got approval and built a fence only to find that a "powerful" member on the board didn't like the way it looked and told her to remove it. The HOA sued and she countersued and the whole thing languished in court for years. Perhaps it still is for the new owners, who knows as my aunt has since died.

That's fine, but it's wrong and ignorant to assume rich old ladies control "most" HOAs.

    And I stand by mine

dealing with several is a far cry from dealing with around 120 HOAs on a monthly basis...
