    You mean the berries ?

Madrone is difficult to transplant from a seedling , you may want to plant it directly into the final location which should be well drained soil

I suppose so. Looked kind of like a wrinkly cherry, or a wrinkly rose hip. I stuck them in a ziplock baggie and mailed them home, and by the time I got back it was like the seeds were glued in there.

Thanks for the tip on the transplanting and the soil; I'll keep that in mind when I stick the seeds.

I doubt they would do well here, but I would love to see a real madrone tree. I would have to make sure it isn't something deer and moose would devour the leaves off of though.

To be honest, I don't know if it'll do well here either. We've got some pretty harsh winters and I'm not sure if it'll survive its first one. But I wanted to try it out, so...

so... you'lll be the one future Mainards (probably not the word for the people of Maine) curse for the hated invasive madrone that grows like a weed and chokes out all of the native vegetation. :D

    Mainards...
Dated a girl in high school whose mother was from CT and she called us all Mainards. Used to call her a flatlandah.

We call ourselves Mainers, generally speaking.

Knowing my luck, the Madrone will get winter killed and the Chestnuts will get blighted, haha!
I experiment with this stuff all the time, though. I've got a couple citrus trees, a pair of avocado trees I started from the seeds, a coffee tree I started from the beans, and a pineapple that I started from a crown. They're all potted, obviously, so I can move them in and out of the house depending on the season.

I'm from upstate NY and they just call us "hicks". I am living in CT now regrettably.

Keeping this at least somewhat on-topic, my parents house had two stoves. One in the basement and one on the main floor. Both were Vermont castings units, free standing. I have some not so fond memories of helping my dad cut and split log lengths every year. The one stove was replaced with a Quadrafire pellet stove which became the primary heat source until it got really cold, then we would use both.

They now have a brand new energy efficient house with an insert that heats the entire 2500sf house.

Lol. I grew up in the Western mountains and we get that label a lot too. Work boots and big trucks...

My parents have heated with a Vermont Castings Defiant since they built their house in the late 70's. Heats their entire house without any trouble, usually using between 4-6 cord, depending on the length/severity of the winter. They've got a forced hot air furnace in the cellar as well, and they buy 100 gallons of oil about every 5 years.

Don't worry , the madrone tree won't live there

Kind of what I'm expecting. Maybe I'll put it in a pot and have a dwarf.

Yes that would work then you could use a very tiny wood stove.

I could get one of those antique cookstove display models, the ones that they used to keep in the old general stores so that you could see all the features they came with before you ordered one.

    Edit: Like this one-

Didn't think so. I heard they are a coastal tree that is very slow growing. Guess I'll stick to the pine I have too much of.

Used the misty day today to finish splitting the stove length I've had cut since last fall and stacking it to fill the 'woodshed' for the season.
Used the cookstove upstairs this morning to take the chill off the house for the first time of the season (it was 40 degrees here this morning and the house had dropped to 60 overnight because we left a couple windows open ), and it lit a fire under me (hurr hurr) to finish the job. Only another couple of weeks before we usually have to start heating on a regular basis.

Only if I seal it up. I leave the front door open all the time, and it faces down the hill (towards the lake, so towards the prevailing wind) and it stays pretty dry. During the winter I get some ice buildup on the inside if I leave the snow on the roof after a storm, but I always shovel it off so it very rarely happens.
