HOA's are set up to protect the communities, period. From safety to property values, the majority of them are legally set up with governing rules that are instituted by the developer and carried through to homeowners as the development grows.
I have successfully set up 4 personally in the best interest of the community. At this point ,y wife and I appointed directors and stepped out of each and couldn't be more satisfied with the results.
From parking on the street, auto maintenance, RV parking to fencing regulations it is a systematic way to deal with general conditions.
Each State, oversight is dealt with differently.
It was your responsibility to recognize and agree to your HOA rules and regs.
    You don't like? Move.

In fact, recently I was told in an Oregon community that I can not build a shop/shed on a home that we had a contingent offer on, I went in front of the board and positively lobbied and lost. We agree with the decision, completely agreeing and canceled the sale contract...

Have heard too many nightmares about HOA's to ever want to live in one...giving someone else control over things like what color my grass and front door should be? Uh, no thank you.

What are they going to do, fine you or make you stay after school for an hour?
I hate ....ing HOA's. They worry about what they shouldn't and they don't worry about what they should.

In many cases they can file a lien on your home, and generally will progress through other options until they run out of them.

Having a $250,000 lien on your home isn't particularly enjoyable, and I've seen it a handful of times in one neighborhood, and over similarly insignificant issues. All of it is done legally, and holds up in court.

I would never live somewhere with an Hoa. In my gfs place they bitch about having trucks parked in the complex. They want truck owners to park on the street while old shitter beaters are a ok.

I have no neighbors close but, I am funny about living next door to 3 families, 7 project vehicles partially disassembled in the yard, 4 barking dogs, 17 fucking reproducing cats, meth lab, a fence made of pallets and chicken wire, 2 RV's on blocks with extended family staying, a boat motor partially buried, overgrown weeds or a dirt front yard with a truck bed with a tarp used as a kiddie pool and urinal with all night/day loud ass music.

I support reasonable HOA code enforcement.

I here you. Just another reason why our world is so screwed up and why every day you see 3 different shootings on the news. There are rules/laws and then there's the spirit of the rules/laws. For example, the highway speed limit in Ca. is 65 but the safe speed is traveling with the speed of traffic and you will never get pulled over for driving 72 mph. I'm not saying you should be able to anything you want and go against your HOA rules, but give me a break. Don't air up your left rear tire in the garage, the dildo HOA president is watching and your dick head neighbor with nothing better to do, might turn you in. I feel for the OP, because I'm dealing with a parking crisis in my small 28 home community.

Damn that must be a SoCal thing. In my neck of the woods, if everybody is doing 72 and you get pulled over, you're just the one who got caught. Traffic court "speed of traffic" excuse doesn't work either.

I have friends that have been pulled over for doing under 70 MPH in the 65 MPH freeway, but were speeding.

A guy I knew in grad school came back from a meeting in LA and told me he was pulled over and ticketed for "impeding traffic" while driving the speed limit. He just paid the fine as it would have cost him more than it was worth to go back to California and fight it.

Speaking of all the rules in the US, here is an interesting map:

When i was shopping for my house i specifically said "no hoa's", they mean well but far too many let power go to their head and make lives miserable if they dont like you or dont get along with you.

Not sure how it makes life miserable if you follow the rules and regs. Much like any law in general, don't speed and law enforcement won't give you a ticket and have reason to arrest you for having a dead hooker in the vehicle. Just sayin'

But that's why you don't sign a lease agreement/purchase contract that doesn't allow you to do so.
