No kidding. I can buy a backup camera online for $100, a huge automaker is probably paying half that. Saying it adds an extra cost is BS.

Ranch Topper, Bull Bar.....Yes, I know everyone thinks they are crap, I like the look

I'd be surprised if the manufacturer pays half,
When you add the cost of TPSM, Anti lock breaks and air bags, that has to be a sizable number.
I don't know the #s but airbags can't be cheap, even when you buy a couple million of them.

Question, are back up cameras mandatory now?
I'm getting that impression from some of these post.

Fuck no they aren't. Base models don't have back up cameras, they are not mandatory.

Put your hip waders on, the BS is pretty deep in this thread.

Yes backup cameras are federally mandated starting next year I think.

Edit: 2018, but mfg's are putting them in (even base models) now so they are compliant with plenty of time.

Mandated back up cameras, that will be dangerous for a while.
Took me a month to convince my wife she had to look behind and around the truck when backing up.
She wanted to use JUST the back up camera.
Fortunately she did not kill anyone

Don't know what you mean by this but I have never owned a Chrysler vehicle not would I ever. All I'm saying is if your vehicle cost 30k and the govt mandates you have to add 5k when of mandated safety equipment you will have to cut costs somewhere. If you don't then the people who have been buying that class of vehicle will complain that it now cost 35k. I'm not saying you have to cut quality even though some manufactures due but they can also lessen the amount of features available.

Thanks for the info on the cameras to help validate my point, next up will be all the collision avoidance systems only a matter of time before that is mandated as well.

Can you source where it says that stuff is mandated? I've never heard that before.

I don't need one but I sure makes checking the blind spot behind your vehicle easy before backing up

Makes putting the bumper within an inch of a wall or the tow receiver centred on a trailer pretty tits
