Your link was broken. Here's a link to the article.

Interesting article although you have to be careful with models and predictions.

The mutations part is probably the scarier part. You won't know it's mutated until whatever treatment that was working doesn't or becomes less effective.

How? A model is used to predict how the virus will spread. A mutation is what happens when the virus changes. They are not the same thing.

Fact (not politics): As the Ebola outbreak continues to cause concern, President Barack Obama has signed an amendment to an executive order that would allow him to mandate the apprehension and detention of Americans who merely show signs of “respiratory illness.”

The executive order, titled Revised List of Quarantinable Communicable Diseases, amends executive order 13295, passed by George W. Bush in April 2003, which allows for the, “apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of suspected communicable diseases.”

The amendment signed by Obama replaces subsection (b) of the original Bush executive order which referred only to SARS. Obama’s amendment allows for the detention of Americans who display, “Severe acute respiratory syndromes, which are diseases that are associated with fever and signs and symptoms of pneumonia or other respiratory illness, are capable of being transmitted from person to person, and that either are causing, or have the potential to cause, a pandemic, or, upon infection, are highly likely to cause mortality or serious morbidity if not properly controlled.”

    Read about it here:

A mutation is required for a virus to spread a new way. What predictions should we not rely on?

Because medicine is all about predictions and statistics.

But a mutation is not required for the disease to spread and not all predictions are dependent on mutations.

All I'm saying is that predictions that depend on model should be viewed with a grain of salt. Not that you should ignore them but realize they are created with a set of assumptions-the more accurate the inputs, the more accurate the model.

And when I say the mutation part is scarier, it's because no one knows (or can easily predict) how the virus will mutate.

    Those are not contradictions.

His condition was downgraded yesterday to 'critical' so that's not a positive sign. Today, they say he's "fighting for his life".

This happens in every country, including the US. The truth is the entire world actually NEEDS to lose 40-60% of it's population. Everyone knows this, but nobody wants to be the one to die.

it is not political until someone starts criticizing it. For now it is information about how the government is working to prevent an outbreak. For the future though it would probably be better if people just said "the president" instead of spelling out his name.
