So I am relatively new to even working on my Tacoma (2006 TRD 4v4 Double Cab 4.0), and I have hit close to 25k since I purchased the truck from the dealer. I highly doubt they replaced the plugs when they received the truck so I'm up. I would very much prefer performance over the stock plugs and don't mind spending 10 dollars a plug. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

OEM Denso tends to wear better from my experience. You can use them for all 6.

Thanks for the info. Is it not even worth buying an aftermarket plug different from the oem that came with it then?

No if its a high hp motor id consider it, the Tacoma is not a powerhouse so id stick with OEM like DENSO

OEM is the best choice for these Tacomas. You will not benefit much from aftermarket plugs.

I just bought mine today at O-Reilly's. The cashier (who is on way to becoming a master mechanic at 25, if it means anything to you) told me the computer registry pulled up Autolite, but that he would never recommend Autolite to anybody and that the best he had seen were NGK. They were $0.50 more per plug than the Autolite.

The price I paid was pretty close to those numbers though I don't know which ones I bought since I'm far from home. I hear Denso suggested a lot. Either should work fine, but don't use E3.

Good to know. The only other brand I was debating replacing them with would be NGK or Bosch but I haven't heard anything pro or con about Bosch aside from Amazon reviews.

I changed mine a few months ago at 31000 miles. Both the NKG and Denso plugs were in good shape. The NKGs had worn a bit (larger gap). The Densos looked new.

What's the story behind them using two different typs of plugs at the same time?

Hmm!
I know this topic is quite old and also beat like a rented donkey! I recently had the pleasure of seeing this issue first hand a friend of mine with a 96 Tacoma very similar to my own was discussing his engine issues, such as stuttering, terrible gas mileage, bogging and flat spots, and now it started dying after getting off the freeway. I asked him what kind of maintenance he had done in the past and he said plugs and wires, fuel filter, air filter, mass air flow sensor, and the usual oil change is around 3000. All these things seem like they could have Ben one of the solutions for these issues. However since they had all been done I left them alone and decided to go straight for the plugs knowing this issue has plagued many Minds! Keep in mind these plugs were 6k miles on the 5vz. the plugs he put in there were recommended by your local auto parts store as factory OE replacements upgraded platinum plugs, or so they say. the center electrode was completely missing from the entire driver side bank plugs, instead of protruding out of the center ceramic insulator it was recessed more than 3 millimeters. this factory OE plug was complete garbage and I could see immediately that this was going to be an issue. I swapped them out for the NGK dual electrode that I have in my Tacoma. Wam bam! LIKE A BRAND NEW ENGINE AGAIN. She ran top notch immediately & not a single symptom was present. moral of this story manufacturer's suggested parts only..

    Crazy!

I just buy them from the parts counter at Toyota. Price is competitive. I think they hand me denso plugs.
